We are replacing a few now. You can fit a D4 rear diff in its place (must be like for like, not ediff if you don't have one already)

Thanks JC. I'm heading in to see Rovertech tomorrow. The noise is from the front and is really bad when engine braking. It definitely not engine related.

    Diagnosis- Front Diff Done

OK. So visited Keven today and one of his guys took a whole half a block to determine it's the front diff that's gone. A quick check of the oil confirmed as metal was visible as is ran out of the diff.

So $1750 for a recond unit or $2850 for a factory refurbished jobby?

JC, Thanks for your guidance and Keven says Hi back. Says you're a great guy but couldn't understand how you had time to look on here

Car has circa 250k on the clock.

Not sure when fluids last changed but previous owner was fastidious with his maintenance so expect/suspect they would have been changed at some point. I had been considering doing all the fluids (will do now, of course!...horse...gate....bolted?.....) at next service. The guys at Rovertech said they are seeing a lot of them, so much so they carry a number in stock. Apparently only 700mls of oil is a problem.

I think you will find a brand new unit for around $1400.

Interesting. Where from? I've had a quick look on Rimmer and Island 4x4 and they were significantly more expensive than that.

No worries. I got a little excited........

A diff mob will do $1650 fitted. But I think I'm going to go with $1925 (my quoted price in an earlier post was was ex GST) from Rovertech for vehicle familiarity and peace of mind. I'll also get all the fluids changed.

The common issues with the pre 06 models was blocking of the breather allowing moisture to build up. I have drained many of red brown rusty oil. The breather was upgraded in 07 onward to a better design that prevented the problem. Lots of early ones suffer this fate as lr also leave huge kms between diff oul changes.
