    D3 misbehaving !

Morning all I have an 07 D3, SE. done 185K.
Apart from the alternator playing up, which was interesting have had no problems at all.

Yesterday went down to Cairns approx 50 odd klms. a few stops pulled up to look at a house, probably 10 minutes stopped. When we started the hand brake turned itself on and I got a fist full of lights and messages, the main one being the low range indicator was flashing ?
After many starts I managed to get the hand brake off, the vehicle starts in 2nd and is very late changing but works well if manually controlled. The low range light is flashing always. Managed to get to the indie that I use - approx 10klms suspension is very low it wont raise, his meter a small orange one that I had not seen before, usually uses a laptop. said the clutch ? in the transfer box is playing up. I did use low range to mount a gutter with a trailer Anzac day but done a couple of hundred klms since with no worries.
I have driven it home 40klms no hassle but with the suspension down and manually controlling the gear box.
Renee is hoping that it will be in the actuating motor or electrics and not the transfer box, booked in next Tuesday for a good look.

    Any suggestions ?

Definitely brake light switch and rear brake globes the cheap place to start. Seems to fix 90% of these issues.

D3 LED Rear lights-Brake, tail and blinker

Check brake lights, replace brake switch. Replace brake lights with LED so it wont happen again. Parts for LED globes in above link.

Thanks for all the suggestions, put in a new Brake switch and no change.

Lot of ins and outs but I was lucky, we were trying to find a time after the service shop had checked it all out and narrowed it to the drive motor, a call came in and a major service was cancelled for the next day so I left it there, could not get a new one in a hurry but Lonsdale had a good used unit and got in on the plane that night.

A couple of photos below, anyone else had this happen, we rarely use low range and I would think the previous owner never did.
Renee has never seen it, but did find an after market metal gear available o/s, so it can't be uncommon ?
The gears in question the screw is metal but the stripped gear a black fiberglass/plastic material.

Oh well - I now have a spare Brake switch !

Edit: We could move and change the shaft by hand easily with the motor off so we hope no problems inside - fine at present.
