    D3-D4 rear wheel carrier reversing sensor problem solved.

    Hi, just mentioning this here because it's specifically related to D3s and D4s.

    There has always been a problem with rear wheel carriers interfering with the reversing sensors. I've heard of many attempts to solve the problem, from trying to trick the electronics, to covering one sensor or half covering a sensor, to rotating the sensors, to simply disabling them altogether, etc etc. None of these work except for totally disabling.

    This is regarding a single wheel carrier only, not a dual replacement bar.

    So, with the help of an LROCV member who volunteered his Landmark D4 as the Guinea Pig, we redesigned our D3/4 carrier to solve the issue.
    Basically it involved raising the wheel and angling it forward at the top, which in turn raises the rear bottom edge of the tyre which is picked up by the sensor when lower.
    Also, we had to do away with the over centre latch which was also in the way of the sensor. The new design has a latching system behind the carrier and automatically locks shut by firmly pushing the carrier closed. To open the carrier it's just a matter of lifting a lever and pushing the wheel.

    We,ve had the prototype on the D4 for several weeks, including a two week trip to Tassie and the owner of the D4 is very happy with the carrier.
    I have just made the first small batch of the new carrier which are all sold. I fitted the first production model to a D4 this week which went well.

    This is the previous model D3-D4 Single wheel carrier.

    The fitting process is quite involved and requires a lot of tools which are listed in the instructions. I'd recommend this carrier be fitted by a well equipped workshop unless you're pretty handy with this sort of thing.

    It will be several weeks until I can make more of these as I'm currently building and moving to a new workshop, as well as fabricating current orders. I just wanted to mention the new design in case you are thinking about fitting a carrier to your Discovery in the future.

    Looks like no tail light obstruction & therefore no additional light required?

    Is the whole unit removable when not required, just leaving the pivot post installed?

    Damn. Would've been good to know baout this before I got my Opposite Lock RWC installed. The parking sensor picks up the edge of the latch mechanism, drive me nuts. I tried unplugging just that one sensor, but of course that seems to disable ALL the sensors. And unlike my L322, you can't simply hit a button on the dash to turn them off. Reversing has become a true PITA.

    G'day Scott,
    Yes, you could remove the whole carrier arm if you don't want it there between trips. The stub axle will come out with the arm, so you just see the hole in top of the bumper. The stainless steel bracket would remain in place too.
