D3 MY09 Black Smoke on accel

    Hi,

    I recently purchased a MY09 D3 TDV6 120k km, fsh

I took the car for a test drive, all seemed well
Booked the car into the same garage which had serviced the car since new.
They said that the car is in good shape, and it is a good buy.

I have had the garage do the 120k service, and replace transmission fluid.

I am noticing black smoke on accel, mostly at night time, with lights behind me.
I have taken video footage, with iPhone wedged into head rest on row 3 seats, and I can't really see much.

I returned to the garage today, to enquire but they were closed.

When I got home, I pulled the MAF gave it a clean (it was already clean)
Checked the air filter, which was surprisingly dusty considering it had a service 1000km ago

And checked the top turbo pipe. Which is in great condition. (Changed nov last year according to garage.)

Although it is quite oily inside the pipe. (Is that normal)?

I would like to know why the pipe was changed, and if the last owner was experiencing issues.

His name and number is in the service book, is it acceptable to contact that person.

I love the car, but want to make sure the foundation is sound, before I start modifying it.

They have a habit of splitting.

But was it the smoke which made the last owner take the car to the garage, however replacing the pipe may not have solved the issue

Normal to see smoke in headlights behind you. Is there any visible during daylight? 120k and 7years is about normal for the top intercooler hose to be replaced, and yes lots of oil isn't unusual.

Best check timing belt history it is due 7 years or 160k. I'd be doing it at 120k personally. ..

If the hose splits then is has to be replaced to restore proper engine performance. The hose is never replaced to solve any other problem although some people replace it with a silicone version to ensure they are never faced with the hose splitting.

    Thanks for the info guys,
I had a mate follow me today.
He said, a little puff as I pulled away from standstill.
I gave full throttle to 120, and it was clear, also backed off, and reapplied power. All good.
I also held it at about 5000rpm in 2nd, and was good.
I will get the timing belt done, as it has not been.

Is there anything else worth doing?

For some reason of lights in smoke it looks like armageddon at night but barely noticeable at day. Do a 1000km trip and even better after that

Oil pump housing change at the same time. Do a search, there's lots of threads on here about the issue leading to destroyed engines. Failure of pulley bolt that's mounted in housing. Confirm if affected but IIRC all D3 are.
