    D4 and General Grabber AT3

I took my recently acquired 2013 D4 to the Vic high country over the weekend. Had fitted GG AT3 a month ago. It was the first time I'd driven a D4 off road and was hugely impressed and very happy with my choice of an upgrade from the D2. While there was no rain there was snow and ice on the tops and a lot of greasy mud in some very heavily trafficked areas. The car and tyres performed beautifully and I didn't lose any forward movement all day. Felt very safe ambling down the steep muddy Weston and Monument tracks and was able to catch up with a couple of Toyotas without trying!

What an amazingly capable and comfortable way to travel. I ran the tyres at 30psi F&R. Mud flaps are needed before the next outing and a compressor guard which I noted when cleaning underneath the vehicle.

I didn't notice any increase in noise compared to the original highway tyres and ditto on handling.

I had GGs on 2 Defenders and they were no noisier than the tyres they replaced. I will probably get them for the D4 as they are a good tyre. Hopefully I'll have them on for the forthcoming LRE trip in 2 weeks time although they do say standard tyres are OK.

I have GGs on GOE 18" wheels on my 2013 D4. But will likely go to an LT tyre, because I want the strong sidewall.

They are a quiet tyre IMO but maybe not especially so since the middle row of seats seem to have more noise than the front.

No surprise that the GG are good on snow, because they are a rated in Canada suitable for winter / snow. Not sure what that means but they'd handle our conditions. But at Mt Hotham, they'd still insist on chains. Those guys ignore very safe 4WDs with good tyres because of the volume of idiots who go up the snow.

"volume of idiots who go up the snow." That comment reminds me of when we first arrived in Oz and my elder bro reckoned it'd be a good idea to go and see the snow up some hill or other in Vic.
Off we went in his new company car (Holden Premier/Kingswood or something) and all went well except for avoiding the idiots coming back down with windscreens covered with snow and just a tiny hole made for them to peer through. Total nutters sliding over the road with no regard for anyone else or even their own safety.
I'd never before seen such lunatic on road behaviour but after 45 years have now got used to it......

PS. When we came down we had to stop a couple of times because the drum brakes kept fading and the 2 speed auto played up. Junk on 4 wheels.

I found the GGs to be very competent tyres in all terrains and not bad wearing in terms of tread life, and not too noisy. BUT they are very soft in the sides and cut cut up very easily. I have now changed to Bridgestone D697s and am finding them to be much more durable.

If it was a Kingswood, then whether it was a two or three speed, it would have made no difference. I drove (to turn it over while the fellow went overseas) a 253 Kingswood - it would have been a luxury version - the model before the radial tuned suspension versions came out which has a rectangular rise in their boot lids - and when you put your foot down with the V8, the noise changed a bit. And nothing much else happened. Before that he had had a Toyota which was a funny looking car - it was a couple looking sedan - which was replaced by the square looking Cressida. Those actually became Lexus vehicles (I know the LS 400 was the first true Lexus and that was a ground breaking car). But I drove that thing and I was shocked - it seemed to be totally silent. Boring handling, but boy it was quiet.

I don't think the Kingswood was junk at all ... it only needed a decent motor IMO. I wonder what one would be like with the Land Rover 3 litre diesel in it...

Agree with AnD3rew. Tyres are good, but take care with the sidewalls

I am restricted to 18" wheels, and I like to stretch to a 265/65/18 ... I like the sound of a 65 profile rather than a 60. Not sure what it will do to the gearing though. I expect bigger tyres will also cost more in fuel usage.

BF Goodrich have such a tyre, but I have no idea what those tyres are like .

General Grabber tyres vary a lot in type and in toughness too - so just thinking of the brand doesn't assist in what you'd get. Some in around the size I use are light truck tyres and they sounded much tougher than what I am currently using.
