Locked and loaded for the Gibb...and HEAVY

Sorry, I won't be able to take Michelle either. My car weighs 2740 with one spare, half a tank of fuel and an empty long range tank. I already have 3 adults in the car so after adding them, full fuel tanks, a second spare, the trailer draw bar weight and the stuff I need to put in the car I think I will be worse off than you. We need to travel as light as possible, that's for sure. I found that out in 2012 when we went to Cape York with the same three adults and a roof top tent. I theoretically couldn't use the long range fuel tank on that trip. With the trailer now, I usually only carry tools, a swag, compressor, 50l Waeco, a couple of chairs and a few other bits and pieces in the car. However, even then I will be close to or over the GVM I think.

I just did over 2000 outback km on my 19" Hankooks with no issues. I just left them at road pressures. Penalty was some tread damage on the rears but I was more concerned about sidewalls if pressures were lowered.

I didn't weigh mine before my trip. I wasn't game and couldn't really take much out anyway, so would rather just enjoy the drive 😁😁😁.

You do that anyway, regardless of weight. Knowing your weight just encourages you to take less of the stuff you will never use and keep everything as light as possible, which helps to enjoy the drive more.

Chris I'm not game enough to run road pressures - even with the short sidewalls, I'll be tempted to drop them by 20% or so and go slower. Road pressures on some of the corrugations on those side tracks off the Gibb, like the Kalumburu Road, tend to turn suspensions and dampers to mush.

Are you travelling with BobD on the GRR? I'd sleep easy knowing that between the two cars you have three spares.

Driving 1000kms on a corrugated road with one less than ideal 19" spare would have me stressing all the way back to the tarmac.

Interesting that your 19" wheels weigh 10kg each more than my 18" with a 285 60 18 LT fitted. The std 255 60 18 is pictured below being weighed, 285 is 27kg precisely.

At 27kg i figured the gain in piece of mind highly outweighed the weight gain, but by the looks of it my wheels are 33% lighter which changes things significantly.

Yeah Russ, Bob and I are tagalong for at least some of the trip. I have one spare 19in tyre on a rim, plus a spare carcase. Bob has two spares on rims, but his are 18s.

It's a 100Ah jobbie in an Ark Pak box. Weighed it on the bathroom scales. Too heavy!
