    Discovery 3 petrol auto

    Hi everyone
I'm hoping someone can help me.
My disco 3 is faulting like crazy on start up.
When u start the car it shows the following faults on the dash
    Hdc fault system not avail
    Transmission fault limited gears avail
    Special programs off
    Sometimes it will have
    Suspension fault
    Park brake fault
    Amber engine light on dash.
I need to remove the key for a few seconds and try to restart.
After four successful starts the engine light clears and the suspension works properly.
I have replaced the battery and the brake switch. Checked all bulbs and earth straps. Unplugged every plug I can find cleaned and inspected.
Landrover have no idea and just want to try a starter motor and see $2000.
I have also tried a 2nd battery to assist with voltage drop. Still faults.
The only success was isolating the starter motor from the system and putting it on a seperate starter battery.
Is that enough to say the starter is faulty?
Or could it be something else

    Cheers
    Mixk

From your last statement it certainly seems like the starter motor is drawing too many amps and lowering the voltage too much but I guess it could be something else causing low voltage and the starter is just tipping it over the edge.

My starter had an internal short at about 65,000km after a trip to Cape York, so it is not unheard of. However, mine couldn't turn the engine over and resulted in smoke and very bad smells when you tried to start it!

EDIT: They should be able to measure voltage and current draw on the extra battery to confirm that the starter motor is drawing excessive current before removing the starter.

Did you use genuine bulbs? I've seen posts where cheap bulbs still caused errors and ridiculously, replacing with genuine bulbs or quality LED resolved similar issues.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it's bulbs as I have tried disconnecting all the lights and it still faults.
I have doubts about the starter motor as sometimes it faults just after the car has started and you have released the key. Really I'm praying it's not the starter as it looks to be a real pain to remove

Sounds like the same symptoms our D3 petrol had a few years ago. Starter motor fixed it.

Wasn't a cheap fix, but nowhere near $2k

Have you load tested your start battery. ? My car started to fault and my battery was only 6 months old and showed good voltage on the multi meter . In the end after much searching I got the battery load tested and it was stuffed .

New battery under warrenty and no more faults. . Worth a try .

    Cheers Ean

Yes Ean. It's funny how when you diagnose a problem you rule out something because you've 'fixed' it to find the replacement was a dud too and totally screws the troubleshooting
