						2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 TDV6 Auto 4x4 MY13
The Disco Sport has given me a taste but I’m always nervous about getting stuck somewhere, damaging the underbody, or blowing a tyre and not being able to get back with the skinny spare. Plus it’s my wife’s car so I can’t use it as much as I want to.
In a few years time what I really want is to travel lightly to out-of-the-way places with just the two of us. Between now and then my kids are high school age and it’d be great to get some camping and a little touring in before they get all grown up.
I *think* this D4 would be a good platform for doing all of that over the next maybe 10 years. It’s got the e-diff. Is there anything about the spec which I would regret over the long term when getting away from the city for a while?
Also, being a private sale, what should I do to make sure it’s not a lemon?

SubscriberRear aircon? Not a deal breaker but it is effective and nice with kids.
Good if there's still warranty on it, would want to clarify that tho. Likely has dealer service history? With 40000 kms it'd have to be a super dooper lemon to have had anything show up. I had to have rear brake discs and pads replaced around those kms, but the ad is saying it'll come with RWC.
It'll do everything you want, no question.

A couple of things I'd say.
Agree re checking service history although by LR service schedule it will probably have had only 2 services.
With build date Dec 2014 and looks like registered (so assume sold) Jan 2015, you should have ~6 months warranty left.
If you're assuming it has e-diff because it says so in the listing, I wouldn't - it also shows as having rear climate control air - it doesn't (can tell by the pics of the dash and the central light)
I think sometimes people tick these boxes off when they put up the listing not really understanding what they are.
Based on your description of what you want to do I personally wouldn't worry about e-diff - it is still very capable without it.
Rear air though is another consideration. It's the only thing I don't have and wish I did in mine. You can get by without it but it would definitely be better for the rear seat passengers with it.
BUT in my opinion it depends how many kids you have. I have 3 so use all 3 second row seats. The third row will cool down eventually but takes longer as you're relying on the 2 vents in the rear of the centre console but worst affected is the middle seat second row - their shins/knees will be frozen. If you have 2 kids and they're on the 2 sides then I think it's fine.

Rhino Platform : GOE compressor, Tx & front bash plates, deluxe sliders
I agree with all comments so far and particularly buying with remaining warranty really helps reduce the risk of buying problems. I can't comment on the pricing as I've done no research in the market but the vehicle itself would be ideal for your intended use with some minor accessorising, the main one being better tyres.
Cheers,
Scott

Strange, they include a pic of the 2nd row seats in the ad, but not of the front seats.
The O/P makes no mention of towing, but just in case I will mention that a TDV6 will be great for towing a camper trailer or small caravan, but for anything heavier a SDV6 (or re-tuned TDV6) would be better, especially if the car is also loaded with people and gear.

David – great pickup re the rear a/c, thanks. I have 3 kids, and the youngest is the most likely to complain about things like cold knees. Will have to ponder that one.
But I *want* center diff lock... Because otherwise how does anybody get any respect around here, especially from the Defender crew?
Scott - I have read your rather inspirational build thread, so those tyre comments come as no surprise at all. I’m imagining something similar to what you’ve done but not quite to the same extent. Not keen on towing much, myself.
Thanks all!
Terry

						An alternative:
2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE Auto 4x4 MY13
This one does have rear a/c but seemingly not the e-diff. It is SDV6, has full length Rhino rack and the engine compartment looks suspiciously full... is that what a second battery and traxide system looks like?
