Cool MY2011 LR4 HDD Navigation Map updates issue

Hi LR lovers, I have just recently made a private purchase of a 2011 LR4 SDV6 HSE with only 46k on the clock. It's perfect except for the outdated nav maps. I contacted LR Australia and they advised me that the last updates for this HDD Nav unit model were 2015 and they could apply these updates for a cost of $450.
I would really like to have 2017 maps, as my trip from Sydney to Maroochydore highlighted how many new roads were not shown on my old maps.
Does anyone have the same issue with the 2010-2011 Nav system in their LR4s and have you been able to either:
    1. Update the HDD maps with a hack to load later maps?
    2. Replace the header unit with an aftermarket alternative?
    3. Replace the header unit with a later LR model alternative?
I expect I'm not the only one with this problem and I feel it's quite disappointing that LR no longer support map updates for this model.
    Hoping you can help me.
    Thank you,
    Greg (Cuz)

What maps does it use and how do you update them ? , i know earlier models use the Whereis maps as do most vehicles in Aus.

I have the same issue with my 2011, so many new roads by now!

However, unless there is some seriously big updates to the software as well there is no way Im paying $450, the factory sat Nav doesn't even give you speed limits, speed cameras, school zones and a whole raft of other features that you normally get with a $100 Navman.

Has anyone done the update? Did these things come with it?

    Unhappy

I don't know who provides the maps, but I'm led to believe the 2010-2011 LR4s have an HDD that stores the maps and can only be accessed by the dealer with a special update tool and a Firewire connection.

I looked into getting hold of these Firewire hard drive tools for the map updates, would have cost me $3k just for the tool!

But the other problem is that the maps actually come on a DVD (from JLR spare parts network I guess) then you need to use the SDD diagnostic system to copy the contents of the DVD to the Firewire drive, and then upload to the nav from there. You also need an activation code for the map license which is only available from JLR. Absolute balls up of a system...

The later nav screen, like from the 2012MY L319, L320, etc... isn't compatible on it's own, since the Nav is in the IAM2.1 head unit and the screen is just a screen. But the 2010-2011MY system has everything incorporated into the screen (hard drive, GPS, etc).

In principle an upgrade to the later system would be possible, but you need to change the screen, head unit (IAM), the audio amplifier, all the wiring is different, plus there are probably some other incompatibilities like the HVAC modules and so on... would be more economical to trade it in on a later model!

You could replace the touchscreen with an aftermarket unit with built-in nav, but then you'd lose the nice features of the factory screen like the 4x4i & suspension info, off-road nav, and the audio controls...

    Thank you Cambo351,
Looks like we're stuck between a rock and a hard place without even going off road :O)

Maybe there is something out there that will mirror my iPhone to the Nav screen. If not, a stand alone GPS (Navman , Hema or Garmin) may be in order.

I hardly ever use the Nav in my MY11. Even the best in car Nav will not be as good as running Google Maps or alternative from your phone/tablet.

Have a look for some mounts and cradles (i can recommend ClicOn mounts, but there are others) and go that way. For safety, you're probably going to want to mount your phone in a cradle somewhere anyway.

This link goes to the site where you can buy a dvd update. As you will see, unfortunately your model is now only provided by LR and to add salt into wounds is actually $80.00 more than for a later model.

I'd be buying a dedicated satnav myself rather than be ripped off by LR. And don't get me started on the way the refused to pay for live updates to traffic etc.

Thank you TuffRR. You've sold me on this one. A simple, cheap and noninvasive solution. Cheers.
