Hi Mike57 I'd be interested to know if you had previously used the drive-off feature of the EPB? Seems they can work fine forever if well adjusted and released before driving off. Failures seem to stem from this area

What if you have to park on a hill? You should always select neutral and apply the handbrake then put into park so as to not put load on the transmission.

I am not going to use the EPB in remote areas any more and in fact I wonder when it is really ever needed. If the vehicle is in Park is that good enough? Does parking on a hill really make it difficult to get out of Park?

To answer Perhdisco, I always disengage the brake before driving off and have never used the drive through function.

On the 6 speed it makes quite an unpleasant thud and takes a lot of force on the stick to release Park so clearly not desirable. God (please reveal yourself) knows how the rotary button works on the D4?

My goal is to use the EPB sparingly when I have to just to keep internals moving.

Always try and rest the wheels on a curb etc. where I can.

Off-road things tend to stay stopped pretty easy in most situations.

On most autos the parking pawl is a simple toothed wheel and pin(similar to attahed photo), so under load they can take a little bit of force to release hence the thud.

Praise the lord, as he is here. Exactly, thus the parking pawl arrangement has zero impact on the life of the tranny. It's a very mechanical arrangement and simply requires an element of mechanical effort to disengage.

On the 6 speed it feel like you are manually ripping the pawl out with the pressure on the shifter but I wonder, oh wise one, how the rotary knob works on the newer cars. Is it a motorised process (another thing to go wrong)?

And quite common when used primarily to hold the vehicle is for this small casting to break...

Releasing the vehicle and or letting broken fragments roll around doing damage in the transmission.

People who rely on the ā€œPā€ position (Parking Pawl) are doing the transmission no favours... are breaking the law... and are foolish 7 nights in Alice Springs - EPB Failure

Using the Parking Pawl to hold the vehicle also leaves all the internals of the transmission loaded up, not good for the transmission as this can increase wear.

Quite common? Maybe I don't get around but I've never heard of one and never seen it mentioned for a Disco, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I'm not advocating not using the EPB, I'm questioning the point that the transmission needs to be babied around the use of the transmission Park function. I don't think it's weak as has been implied.
