The only other thing I worry about is being able to ever service the winch should it need it. Have to pull everything out to get to it.”

apparently the best way to minimise (but not avoid forever) the need for servicing of the winch is to regularly, say every two weeks, is to operate the winch out and back in at least once. This warms the winch gearbox and helps to dry out any moisture in it which is what kills the gearbox. It’s especially important after water crossings, and if you’re really anal, after really heavy rain as well. It’s usually recommended by the manufacturers that they are serviced annually but I think that if they are used regularly this interval can be stretched a bit.
    cheers

Brilliant Scott - very nicely done. I'm still fluffing around agonising whether to go the easy path and whack on a bullbar.

I just really prefer this discreet option - I really do like the front end of the D4 hmmmm

Forgot to say Scott you’ve done a really nice job there. I watched the other day the video which made you decide to buy one

Bull bars do nothing for the D4 look IMHO😐

The maintenance schedule provided by Carbon Winch requires operation of the winch once a month for the reasons you've mentioned (redistribute grease and displace condensation) as well as after water crossings or submersion in mud. They also recommend yearly maintenance of the gearbox, which is disassemble, clean & regrease. However this is not a prerequisite for the warranty to be maintained, which I take as a good sign for the unit's quality.

I rigged up some of my recovery gear in order to spool the rope off the drum and run it in under tension, which is also a prerequisite of the installation instructions. This being up and down my driveway also makes it relatively easy for me to comply with the monthly operation, given that I just don't get out in technical terrain anywhere near that often.
