    Which disco for towing

Hi there. I've been following these threads for a while now as I how to be in a position to buy a d3. It's primary purpose is as a tow for my trailer sailer which sits on a dual axle trailer at just on 2t.
I've noticed lots of chat about the variants of the d3 and d4 engines and gearboxes but wonder what I should be looking out for when I'm ready to buy? I really can't go the extra expense of a more recent d4 so what variants should i look for in a d3?

    Hi
While any of the variants will have no problems, the most efficient will be the tdv6 , the main thing I would look for is the air suspended models which as a bonus have terrain response, I tow my trailer sailer 2 tonne sonata 7 a lot with my d3 tdv6 effortlessly. Welcome to the forum

And if you go with the TDV6, make super certain you get the FULL service history with it, particularly the changing of the timing belt and oil pump and oli changes etc.

I was aiming for one with air to make hitching a bit easier as it was. Is the tdv6 different that say a hse 2.7d? Or se, same diesel?

The diesel in the D3 is the same (as far as I can remember) in all models. It is the 2.7L single turbo.
I don't think the 3L was ever fitted to the D3 range.
But my knowledge is limited as I have a 4L petrol V6!!!!
The S model D3 was coil spring suspension in almost all cases, and the SE and HSE were air suspension.

Have a look at this thread,if you already haven't

    My First Disco 4 Experience

    Basically,all D3 were 2.7i and 6 speed auto.

    D4 was 6 speed auto,2.7l and 3.0l until2012.

D4 was then upgraded,2.7l was dropped,so was six speed auto for 8 speed.Engines were upgraded. 3.0l twin turbo, or 3.0l single turbo with less power and torque.

    Clear as mud

Any will tow no worries, will do it easy, even the 2.7 is no slouch.

i recently towed a 2.5T van, mine did it no worries, but it has a bit more go than a stock 2.7.

My understanding is that both engines are sequential turbo (twin turbo) - as a general statement, the basic difference is the engine map as the engine hardware is the same.
