Thread: Is this something to worry about, scuffing on rear bar behind tow hitch.

It doesn't look right to me. I always thought that a tow hitch is fixed to the chassis and a rear bar similarly therefor they shouldn't move. I would grab one at time and try and see which one moves. I only have the Mitch Hitch and it definitely doesn't move.

I have a Kaymar bar and found the wheel hanger moving , tightened it up on the pivot point .Next job is to replace the bearings in it.

That hitch is different to my Mitch Hitch. Mine doesn't extend past the top of the hole for the plugs but yours has an upper extension with a stiffener plate. I don't know what that would be for.

Neither part should have enough movement to allow them to touch so hopefully it is the result of stones lodging in the gap, which my car doesn't have due to the lack of that upper plate. Plenty of stones lodge in every other crevice so it is a possibility with that design.

Both my bar and hitch are rock solid with zero movement.

For it to chafe like that it must be loose, Check all the mounting bolts for tightness/damage.

Same here. Mine doesn't have the top section with elbow. Maybe a 'competitor' version.

Don't see why it would rub, as movement of the hitch when fully tightened would be almost zero. The rear bar is probably the one doing some flex, especially if not tensioned correctly.

The bush could be worn and may need replacing also.

If the bush is worn then could I assume that the suspension has been flogged? Or is D3 suspension hard wearing

How so? the bush in the tow bar has nothing to to with the suspension. If the tow bar bush is worn in theory the bar could move side to side especially if the lower bolts have worked a bit loose.

As mentioned your tow bar does not look like the standard Mitch Bros Hitch - a pic of mine below.
