Actually, there used to be these little 'wire' things - I don't know if you can still get them - they had a spring base and pointed out at about ankle height; made a noise on connecting with kerb.
There is (sometimes) a male-female difference in 'distance perception'. Nothing is universal - just watch some rhythmic gymnastics and see if you ever 'could' have been that good - but some women have more difficulty with spatial perception & mental calculations than others.
Another solution is 'more cameras' or proximity alarms of the electronic rather than mechanical kind.
