They differ from rear windscreens in the fact that, with exception to some ‘exotic’ (expensive) types like Benz and Jensen (which had laminated rear windscreens), most have a ‘hotline’ on toughened glass, which is a conductive ceramic paint that is screen-printed onto the flat glass. When it goes into the die bender (which bends the flat glass into its final curved shape), the paint is annealed into the surface by the heat of the furnace, and you have an instant demister.

    D4 Replacement Windscreen

Just check, I think from memory my D1 had a separate button for the heated mirrors but the D2 didn’t but when you turn the rear demist (rear window) the heating in the mirrors worked. I think this is how they do it now. I have cold climate pack in the D4 and part of the pack didn’t include heated mirrors, they are std. I just turn rear demist on and the mirrors heat up.

    D4 Replacement Windscreen

It’s hard to see, but this is what the heated screen looks like. There is a tiny element running up the screen about 5mm apart all the way across.

As the photo by Di5co shows there are no demister wires/lines. The heating element in the screen is very hard to see except when driving directly into the sun and even then it looks like almost "glitter" in the screen. It is never intrusive and most of the time you would not know it was there.

nothing better on a cold frosty morning than being able to clear the ice with the wipers after about 1 minute.

The installer phoned an hour ago and advised that he’ll be ordering the screen from Land Rover (and trim clips) - seems to believe that there’s no suitable aftermarket screen.
i just had my heated screen(comes as part of cold climate pack) replaced, . Obriens fitted a non OEM screen, but none of the auto sensing issues exist, everything works fine. cant tell the difference, apart from the logo's

    Thats good to hear.

I’m still waiting to hear back from the installer to arrange a time.
It’s been interesting in the meantime to watch the crack meandering slowly across the screen.

    1. Is it possible to retrofit a heated screen to a non-heated screen D4? That is, is it just a case of finding the wires and re-configuring the CCF?
    2. Is the Pilkington opticool glass the same as the OEM glass, just without the Landrover logo?
    Hi Don,
    Trust you are well.
Were you able to retrofit a heated screen into the D4 please?
The reason I ask is because OBriens replaced my daughter’s screen with a Pilkington Opticool and it has the heated elements embedded in the screen. (As per the photo in this thread).
daughters car is not set up for heated, but it would be nice to activate it. She lives in western NSW and gets frosts.
    thank you and best wishes

Hi Jeffrey. All's well thanks. Just came in from prepping the D4 for our Simpson trip in a couple of weeks.
No, I replaced the screen with a genuine one but it was not heated. I would be surprised if the wiring connections were not already there for a heated screen, but I have not gone looking for them. When I get some time I'll check the wiring diagram and have a look for the relevant connection. The terminals on the new windscreen will give you a clue where to look.

    Hi Jeff

The connections are behind the pillar trim... make sure theyre connected first
Then you'll need a centre control panel with the front demister button - you can get one from a wreck / new or go an aftermarket "Rangie Style" touch control
Then its a matter of goinginto the CCF and enabling the front screen demister function.
