Thread: Discovery 4 disc brake replacement? Any recommendations pls?

Were you doing a lot of towing during that 5000km, and your brake controller isn't setup well, meaning your Disco was braking the majority of the load? Failing that, I can't understand that. I'm up to 60,000km on my fronts and they've still got another 20,000km in them I expect.

Get yourself to an independent and get it done for a quarter of the cost, or DIY it. It's a pretty easy job.

I think that Gary means only 5K of wear left.

Mine is a D3 not a D4, and I've just ordered a set of Akebono's from the US, front and rear, for less than A$300 shipped.
At this stage, I'm only doing pads, not rotors.
Not sure if the D4 is different.
Plan to fit them myself - I did my old Disco 1 and my Perentie, so this one can't be much different.

Look for Bodsy's brake bible on the Disco 3 UK site. I can't post the link but it may even be on here somewhere.
Its a step by step for all the brakes on a D3 , can't see the D4 TDV6 being much different, not sure about the 3.0 but it can't be much different

I replaced all 4 rotors and pads at around 100,000 kms. The OEM rotors are softer than aftermarket, the trade off being that they give more brake bite.

I would suggest replacing pads and rotors at the same time.

at the next service I had the brake fluid flushed and changed.

i went for the DBA “kangaroo paw” solid rotors (no need for drilled or slotted ones) ordered via Coventrys auto parts. I also went for Bendix brake pads all round, however in hind sight should have gone with Ferodo pads for the front, as the Bendix 4WD pads are the dustiest pads I’ve ever run.

all up cost me 600-700 bucks. Fitting is really easy, remove wheel, undo pad retaining clips and remove old pads, undo brake caliper mount bolts, remove caliper. I tied mine out of the way with a zip tie. Und the rotor mounting socket head cap screw and remove.

fit new rotors and pads and replace wheel. Repeat at all remaining corners. I worked on from two then back two. Took about 3-4 hours total, as I also cleaned the rims inside and brake calipers(with brake cleaning can).

if I was to do it again, i would take the time to paint the DBA rotor hubs, as they surface rust. The oem rotors have a nice grey primer coat. I’m now at 174.000 km and will replace front pads with Ferodo Pads in the near future. The rear are still Bendix and not dusty at all.

from eBay a set of front pads is about $75.

the oem costs are rather high.

I went through this exercise just recently, in the end only needed some rear pads at this stage. Repco had brake pads on sale, ($75) and to my surprise had the HD Bendix pads in stock, so keep an eye out for sales and you can save a bit.

Just FYI even though the pad wear sensor is on the RH rear inner pad, when I checked pad wear during service I found LH Rear inner pad to be the most worn.

I thought each wheel was fitted with a wear sensor?
