    What would you do?

    Hi Pitt Team..

I have a very intermittent error code which comes up - P0087 (Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low).

When I say intermittent I mean I drive numerous times per day but I get the error about every 1-2 months, when it happens i hear a 'ding' then it says restricted performance and goes into limp mode. To fix this I simply pull over, turn the car off, turn it back on and drive away.

    Here is some more info:

    1) Last week I towed a 2.2ton caravan four hours north and back again, no issues while towing despite big hills both slow and at freeway speeds.
    2) On this same trip I was beach driving (soft sand) no issues
    3) Then 2km up the road after leaving the beach and while driving a slow 40km/hr - ding - I get the error. and again 300m later.
    4) Often I would get this error twice in a row (within a km or so) and then not for another month or more

    My options I guess are:

    1) ignore the problem, it's only so often right?! My concern with this is that it could happen on the harbour bridge one day, or in a remote town and the simple turn off fix may not work.
    2) Take it to an LR specialist - I'm scared to do this as they will not offer much 'warranty' if I spend thousands and the problem is still there two months later
    3) take it to LR - they will charge an arm and a leg but hopefully they can get the correct outcome (although I won't know for a few months if it works), and if the error is still there perhaps I can hold them responsible for fixing the wrong part and they can fix the next one themselves?!

What would you do and why?

Okay i had something very similar ontop of that i had p0091 also... thinking the world was about to end low pressure pumps...high pressure pumps... i was going to order the high presssure sensor and swap out too... in the end... i changed fuel filter and cleaned my MAP sensor thoroughly with MAF cleaner... now she runs like a dream again... no more errors since.... fingers crossed

Thanks for the post, gives me hope.

I changed the fuel filter 6 months ago when the problem first started but cleaned the MAP Sensor today, it was filthy, i feel like it was 100% blocked by silt.

It’s a long wait to know if that has any effect so any other suggestions are appreciated

I’d do as above, maybe change the filter again,, I’m assuming it only has one of them.
You could ring and ask LR what they “think” it could be.
The other thing I’d check, is loose connections.

What did you spray it with? I cleaned the gunk out but didn’t want to be too intrusive as I’m not sure how it works so I didn’t know how fragile it is.

The pipes it plugs into are fairly dirty as well

Contact cleaner is what I use - altho you can buy MAP cleaner in a spray can as well . Assuming you have a TDV6 the Y piece is where the EGR comes in a gunks it up real bad. I pull the Y piece and clean it out every service. Its a messy and job and the stuff goes everywhere , makes you wonder what the hell the inside of the engine suffers from with that crap on the intake side.

Are there any other sensors like this I should be cleaning? I’m reading more and I’m seeing something called MAF sensors as well.. are these accessible?

and yep I think a clean of the Y piece couldn’t hurt.

I am pretty sure its the MAF that is in the pipe that is part of the air cleaner housing. You need to undo the hose clamp that connects it to the plastic air pipe that runs across the top between the radiator and the fan shroud. There is the hose clamp and I think its 2 x 8mm bolts that hold that pipe in place. You can see the MAF when you look towards the air cleaner .

If you remove that plastic air pipe be careful that nothing falls down the pipe its connected to on the passenger side beside the radiator as that's direct feed to the turbo. The plastic pipe that removes has a flare on 1 end so it fits over the top of the pipe on the passenger side, there is no clamps or bolts holding that side on . Hope that makes sense as I am doing that from memory as I don't have the car here to look at.

I’d use caution with removing it too often. I had mine break on my car. The Y intersection is glued to the throttle body and broke clean through. I hadn’t had mine apart so it broke on its own. Gluing it to repair it lasted only 10K km so I ended up with a new one at around $600.
