I have towed 2.6T with mine no problems at all.
It does have the power upgrade, and EGR blanked though.
Fuel economy is around 14.5 to 16l/100,or around 18l/100 going into a headwind.
I am considering upgrading our 05 D3 4.0L to a D4. I had been looking at the 3.0L diesels but would like some opinions on upgrading to the 2.7 instead for budget reasons. I’m also a bit wary of buying into problems with a twin turbo 3.0L.
we have a 3.5t ATM van which when loaded for a long trip with the kids is usually in the 3.0 to 3.2tonne range.
the 4.0L Petrol D3 tows it OK but suffers a bit from fuel economy with the van on the back and lacks a bit of power in the hills. It is also getting on in years so time to update it anyway.
Anyone with experience towing a heavy 3t+ van with a 2.7 and would I feel much difference over the D3 petrol?

Charlie,
economy varies. Van pretty much empty on a flat freeway about 15L/100. With a load on and some hills around 20L/100. Quite hilly it is closer to 25L/100. I don’t want to think what it might be dragging it in sand....
