    Temporarily disable passenger safety airbags

Hi all, wanting to know if it's possible to disable airbags temporarily.

Back ground of this is that some of my family's favourite memories are from my boy sitting on my lap driving the old 110 county. This started when he was 1yo and he's been changing gears for me since he was 2(now 6 and daughter, 3yo, gets in on it too)
This only happens when driving slowish on cattle property's etc. If you want to tell me it's unsafe then don't. It'll fall on deaf earsTemporarily disable passenger safety airbags.

Wifey said get a quieter car with more forward facing seats so I now also have a D3.

The last few trips I've not let kids sit in the front as I don't like the idea of an airbag going off.
I'd like to know if it's possible to either take the fuse out without any other problems or rig a switch inline.
I realise this is probably illegal and I'd have to make sure I don't forget turn them back on.

Thanks brains trustTemporarily disable passenger safety airbags

My D3 has a key switch to do just that. It's in the manual.
in fact most sane cars I've been in or owned that have passenger airbags have a switch to turn them off for just that reason.

And yet that has nothing to do with the Drivers Airbag. Temporarily disable passenger safety airbags

To the OP.. I did this also with my son, it’s unsafe and you know it, but the good news...

If you keep speed way down, even in an impact, the bag won’t deploy.

If you have an impact hard enough to deploy the bag, you would have crushed the child anyway... (bit morbid).

Thanks BradC, I should have stated drivers airbag specifically, I wrote passanger to differentiate the suspension airbags. My bad.

    Tombie, thanks for this info.
Any idea if there a speed this kicks in? I'd guess it would be more related to speed of crush cans on the front of vehicle. eg: if someone else hit you they'd go off even if you're going slow.
Like you said, bad outcome anyway.

If I knew 'airbags shalt not deploy below 60/80' Temporarily disable passenger safety airbags I'd be happier taking the risk. But I'd assume it's closer to 40?

I read the fuse controls bags ana SRS. Might try pulling it out sometime.

Yeah, a slight misinterpretation on my part. The only thing is you'll want to be seriously sure about your power sources, and you'll want a scan tool to reset the flood of faults and re-set the airbag ECU when you reinstate it.

A quick look at my wiring diagram sees fuses 9 & 68, but airbag control modules tend to have some considerable time of internal backup also. Another thing to be aware of.

the other option would be to power down the car and pop the airbag out of the steering wheel.

Not something you'll want to do for a casual run around the farm.

Unfortunately the handbook even though it is provided with Aussie cars is an international edition. You cannot turn the passenger airbag off. If you look at the spot on your car mentioned in the handbook you will find the key switch is not there and there is a sticker indicating as such and kids not to be in the seat.

This aspect should be in the Aussie Supplement but it is not.

    Have a look

Boof - Just dont do it - dont be a Boof it is just plain dumb in your vehicle.

Ahh. Mine is a UK import, so it has the switch which works as designed.

Ok - Aussie cars do not have this - does your car meet ADRs?

Mine was delivered with the switch accessible.

Following the next service I noticed the sticker removed and a blanking plug fitted over the switch.

Imports do not have to meet the same ADRs than those sold here do. I know as I imported my Freelander 2 from the UK. There are mandatory safety things that you must meet but those aside it’s a lot easier.
