    Mixing tyre types

    I currently have hankook rf10 19” on my d4

I have a brand new as a spare and a second spare with a damaged sidewall which I plugged as only a very small hole in it.

I am thinking I may go the maxxis for my next set as I tow a van and the hankook do bulge a bit. The Maxxis are also LTs

    Now to the point.

Could I replace the damaged hankook with a Maxxi and use it as a second spare until I am ready for a tyre upgrade.

If so would I be able to keep my new hankook, which is currently my first spare as the second spare when/if I get Maxxis

    Thanks for any help

I thought that you could not mix radial and non-radial tyres on the same axle. As far as brand of tyre is concerned, I don't think there is a limitation as long as the size is the same and the tyres are suited to the vehicle (load and speed ratings ok). Now wether it is a good idea to mix brands of tyres I'll leave up to you, but if you were to do it just to get to the next tyre place I wouldn't think it is an issue.

You should just give me your phone number

I would not do it as a permanent thing, just as you said to get to the next spot I can get a tyre of the same type. Which still could be difficult for either hankook or maxxis.

It is a gamble as I want to move to Maxxis/LT tyres and am trying to save some money as the car has been expensive lately and someone has noticed.

Non-radial? So you are referring to cross ply tyres from the 60s? Both tyres are radial as will be denoted by the R in their size.

The only issue between mixing tyres across axle can be size which impacts the diff. If it was an LSD then it would be very angry with you and heat up or wear faster (if the size difference was significant). In the case of a Disco it’s less of an issue however handling might be affected. The traction system should recalibrate to the different size over time as it will soon understand that when the wheel is straight the different rotations have changed.

Essentially I’d say temporary it’s fine but long term not really recommended.

This will never happen! If the size difference is bad enough a steering angle sensor fault will occur.

There is about 4mm difference between maxxis at980 767mm and hankook rf10 763mm

Not sure if that would be an issue re above comments

Rf10s hav been , I bought 6 new and have been unlucky with two unreparable punctures.

Well G, that would only happen on the front I’m guessing, unless you have 4 wheel steer? Mixing tyre types

I’m sorry, I also completely disagree based on my own experience. I have had no issue using a brand new spare of different type on an axle where the offside was at minimum tread, and received no errors. Maybe I’m special (I like to think so personally)?

Mixing brands or new and worn of the same nominal size isn't normally a problem but mixing sizes, eg 30" and 31" will trigger faults and seemingly random TC activation. There is no learning of differences, only tolerances.

Correct, sorry couldn't think of what they were called.

I put my second spare on just after Arkaroola some years ago on the way to the Simpson because it was easier to get to. It was a General Grabber AT tyre and it went on the left rear when all the other tyres were the original Wranglers with highway tread. All tyres were the same size so I thought that was just fine. I drove 4,000km with it on and changed it over when I got home. At that point I realised that the AT tyre with the same size designation actually had a noticeably larger diameter due to he much deeper tread. No errors were recorded and 30,000km later there are no ill effects. I would say the car seems to be able to handle it but at others say for control on the road it is probably not good practice.

The Wranglers BTW were fine in the desert but got chewed up pretty well on the gibber plains there and back. They were replaced with KO2's on new 18 inch Compomotives not long after that trip.
