Another dumb question re tyre sizes

    Hi
I have hankook dynapro rf10 with 19” rims

I am about to go on long trip towing the van. The trip will include a fair bit of dirt driving so want to take a second spare

My first spare is new due to a recent puncture

I did a check and my existing tyres have about 6mm tread and the new one is about 9mm

If I get a new tyre would it be best to fit the two new ones to the car.

It would be good to put them on the back as I am towing but I believe they should go on the front.

    Thanks for any help

    Richard

Can't see it making much difference, so long as both tyres on same axle have same tread.

Agree that the correct way is to have similar tyres on the same axle. As you are towing I would put the new ones on the rear as they are likely to wear more. Just my opinion. Otherwise they would go on the front as they do most of the braking.

I am in the same situation as I have 2x brand new spares and my tyres on the D2a have about 40% tread left on them.
If I was just using these tyres just to go into town and general running around I would leave them on for another 20.000ks But as I will be embarking on a trip that could last 6-12 months I am going to put a new set of tyres on the truck just to play it safe.
I am also towing a 1.5t boat so having a Good set of tyres is pretty much essential as far as I am concerned

Replacing the lot is an option, even if expensive one, I would need to buy 3 new ones and would keep two of the existing ones as spares as I reckon 6mm is still ok

Mind you I would like to go to Maxxis.

So putting the two new ones on the back would be ok

That’s what I’m going to do with mine. Run my rear Cooper LTZs down, keep the two better front Cooper LTZ and move them to spares. Buy four new Maxxis. The Coopers have been ok to me but are costly.

Just make sure the tyres on the front are similar or it could affect steering and hard braking. My Defender is pulling to the left under hard brakes at the moment because the front tyres have different tread depths. One is the former spare, but I got a flat which I repaired, but it's only fit for a spare now, until I buy new tyres.
Under hard braking most weight goes to the front.

And no sooner do I say that I tear a hole in the side of the rear left Cooper on a river crossing when I found a rock.
Pair of Maxis to be sorted.

I ended out swapping out my hankooks for Maxxis, kept one, unused fir second spare.
There were no hankooks around any way.

The Maxxis have a max cold psi of 80 compared with the hankooks which is 50

When towing I found my pressures went well over 50psi hot trying to follow the 4 or 6 psi rule I was pushing the boundary of the hankooks and may start with a pressure close to 50 cold so Maxxis being an LT are much better suited for me

However they are the noisiest tyres I have ever had hopefully I will get used to it or I will have to start listening to the radio at higher volume
