    Discovery 4 20 inch to 18 inch

    Gidday,

After stalking the forum over the last few months to research whether or not to come over to the dark side and buy a Land Rover Discovery 4, i have finally pulled the trigger and just picked up a 2015 Discovery SE. I want to set the vehicle up for touring and towing and the occasional 4WD weekend.

After years of Pajeros it was a big decesion to come across to Land Rover but after researching all the good information on this forum and then finally getting to drive a few of them, i was hooked.

My LR comes with a set of 20 inch wheels and tyres and as i want to do some offroad work with it, i would like to install a set of 18 inch wheels and AT tyres instead of the 20s.

My question is, can i go straight down to an 18 inch rim and AT tyre combo?

I realise that there are only a few 18 inch rims that suit the Discovery such as Compomotive and Tuffant. Do i have to use these rims or can i just buy a second hand set of LR alloys and install an AT tyre to them?

The reason i am asking is that i would like to get it right the first time after never having spent so much money on a car before and i dont want to stuff it up.

I ve alrady laernt so much from this forum regarding useful information about dual batteries and Traxide and so much more useful information that will hopefully enable my build to go so much easier.

    Cheers

    Paul

    Hi Paul, and welcome.

Those two rims you mentioned are basically your only choices, although there maybe a couple of others I have not actually heard of maybe (?).
There are others that will fit, but they are not legal due to weight requirements, ADR's etc, so be careful and do you homework if you decide to go with something else.

I'm putting a set of TuffAnts on mine this week with Falken AT tyres. I had 20's with the Nitto AT's on prior, which were good, but like you, we're into touring with some mixed play, so I want a taller tyre,, hence the change to TAnts.

So now, on to more important things , are you going to come out to Winter Wombat? If you haven't seen it, its a weekend camping trip, and at this point, there's probably close to 30 or so cars going. Not all of us will be playing in the mud, although the option is there. Be nice to see some more D4's out there

Welcome and congratulations Paul. The Compomotives and Tuffants are the only 18" wheels that will fit without modifications to your callipers.
The tyre size that is the closest match to your factory size is 265/60/R18 which is slightly larger but there's no rubbing or other issues.
Quite a few people run 265/65 or 285/60. Bigger than that is possible but requires modifications to fit.

    Cheers,

    Hi Paul.

    Welcome to the forum.

I too had a couple of Pajeros for many years before I bought a D4 HSE in 2013. I've recently fitted 18" Compomotives with 265/60/18 tyres (Michelin LTX Force) to replace the oem 19" rims and tyres. Very happy with both although I'm unlikely to get off road in the near future to try them out. My reason was to add a bit more comfort to the ride which they did and to have a more rugged tyre as the oem 19s proved a bit vulnerable to damage.

I suggest also that you keep your 20" set for around town and use the 18s offroad only. You wont get much money for the 20s anyway.

    Welcome Paul,

I've fitted out my D4 with 18" wheels (only used off road) and the other options you are looking at plus removing the third row seats and creating an underfloor storage area. You are welcome to drop over and have a look if you like. I'm in Brighton. PM me for details.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Its going to make my build alot easier to know that i have the wisdom of the members here so i can make well informed decisions.

Its going to take a while to understand all the posts and threads as its a new world when you are coming from the Japanese 4WD world and everthing is completly differant. I am looking forward to Winter Wombat but not this year as i want to get a few mods into the Disco before i take her away.

    Cheers

Paul, don't stress about having a fully "kitted" car to arrive in,, and don't forget, these vehicles are awesome straight off the showroom floor. There will be many vehicles there that are bog stock standard, and still doing a trip of some description. There's usually a couple to choose from,, mud pluggers will find the biggest holes and mud, some will be strolling around the country side taking in a few dirt roads, to some who just head off to visit some of the local towns, probably not even hitting the dirt at all.

Don't be bashful,, if you've got nothing happening, come up for a day trip on the Saturday,, you'll be made feel very welcome by all and sundry.
