    D4 2.7L Timing Belt Service

    Hi All,

My 2011 2.7 is coming up to 160,000km and is due (overdue?)for the belt service. I have done a bit of reading through the forum on the matter and it seems that it is a good time to get a few things done as my intention is to keep the vehicle for quite a while yet.

I am not overly mechanically minded so I apologize if my list contains some duplicates, and maybe some of these items are done as a matter of course - just want to make sure I don't miss anything.

So, below is a summary from my AULRO research, I just cut and pasted, (and added a couple of clarification questions) but would appreciate further detail or any advice as to any other bits and pieces I should ask for.

    - timing belt and tensioner
    - idler pulleys
    - high pressure fuel pump belt and tensioner
    - serpentine belt, idler and tensioner
    - cam belt
    - turbo hoses (replace with Silicone?)
    - Oil Pump - If you are replacing the oil pump you must replace the crank bolt. The bolt is torque to yield and single use only.

(The D4 2.7 were an improvement over the D3 2.7,different crank and uprated oil pump casing - does this mean the casing does not need replacing?)
    -cooling water outlet
    - water pump
    - injection pump belt

I will also check whether a coolant flush is due, and if so do that, and replace the
coolant system crossover pipe (I think that is the thermostat housing).

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/experience,

    Pat

From what I've read you shouldnt need to do the oil pump housing on yours - should already be the updated version.
Coolant flush makes sense as you need to disconnect a few coolant hoses to get access to the timing belt, and its a good time to do the coolant outlet while everything is drained IMHO. High pressure fuel pump belt needs doing at the same time - from when I done mine that would have been the more likely belt to break too as the belt was significantly harder than the main timing belt. I suspect that may be due to the extra heat that the belt would be running in during normal operation.
You could change the serpentine belt while in there as it also needs to be removed, however access to it is easy so it can be done at a later date if needed without any real issues.

I'll second doing the serpentine belt - I have the 3.0, which I think is a narrower belt than the 2.7, however it started to let go on me whilst on top of a mountain (as well as the idler pulley and tensioner). Cut the day short, damaged the Disco's reputation in front of the group of Pajero owners, and generally made for a less than desirable ride home.

Won't kill your engine if it goes (like the timing belt does), but is still a PITA to resolve if broken.

I got all my belts and other items done at Mills-Thom a while ago, both belts and the serpentine as well. I am now heading toward 190000km now. Their prices and service are good.
    cheers Graeme

You may want to do the thermostat when the coolant has been drained. Just be aware as I found out that part number LR073372 (below left) advertised on a number of online stores as “thermostat housing” has nothing to do with housing the thermostat??? Part number LR009652 (below right) is the thermostat and housing. The part numbers are for a 2008 D3.

The pictures don’t semed to have worked. Here are the URLs.
