    Replacement Steering Wheel?

Had the Discovery 4 for just over a week now, working my way through all the bits and bobs and loving it.

So far, the only real gripe I have is a dislike of the steering wheel.

It's a 2013 SDV6 SE and has the shiniest, slipperiest steering wheel I've ever seen.

Do any other models have a matte type wheel that can be swapped in, or are there any aftermarket wheels that retain all functionality? Long shot with that one I guess, having the paddles too etc.

I'm sure I've seen photo's of Discovery 4's with soft style steering wheels?

    Cheers.

There are people in the UK who refurbish/recover them - I believe they can do on the basis of send one to you and then you send your old one back.

Mine is a 2013 HSE and has the leather kit as standard. The steering wheel is covered too. That's probably what you've seen.

Every model of the 2013 D4 has a leather trim steering wheel …. check the spec. They are all the same.

I've never heard a single report of this.

You're either taking the Mick or somebody has put the worst product possible on it!!!

Try a leather prep, stripper and then recondition. It may screw it up completely, but hey … you're willing to spend the money to look at a replacement. ;-)

No mick taking, I can assure you.

It has the genuine leather steering wheel, it's just very shiny leather. Just could have sworn I'd seen Discovery's with perforated soft type wheels.

This is mine. Hard to see in the pic but it's super slick and shiny the whole way around (not warn shiny in places if you know what I mean?).

Mine is the same - years of oils from hands working it to a smooth finish I assumed.

Doesn’t bother me to the point of replacement, but following the story none the less! :-)

Have to say, it is marginally better/duller now than a week ago. Who knows what cockpit shine cack the dealer sprayed all over the joint.

It's certainly not a disaster zone, it appears to be what it's supposed to be, I've just always had a thing about steering wheels for some reason. I guess being that it's the part of the car you're most tactile with as a whole.

My MY08 SE came with a rubber wheel. During Warranty it showed signs of deterioration at the top and the dealer replaced it with the leather wheel. I love the look and feel of the smooth leather. Still looks good as new.

Not sure if you could go backwards to the original POV pack steering wheel.

    That's why I said or :-)

I'd say you've got a product based issue. You've just recently bought it, so the yard or previous owner has probably slopped something on it. I had my old D4 detailed before I sold it and some of the products the guys used left things either sticky or slippery.

I've used Oakwood products in the past that come as a kit with stripper/prep and conditioner. I wouldn't recommended it if you need the car straight away, as it looks like a Turkish wrestling team has been in the car.... LOL. But once it soaks in … I usually leave it overnight …. and then wipe off excess, it comes up a million bucks. I'm sure others will chime in with their preferred brands products.

But I'd say a very high quality leather stripper/conditioner to try to remove whatever is in there currently would be a good and safe (contrary to my smart arse comment) place to start.

I've had D4s since Jan 2010 and never had nor heard of this issue.....issue truly being a problem with the steering wheel I mean.

Whilst my wife hates driving my car, however she loves the steering wheel's finish, compared to her new Merc. So that's got to be saying something.

RE: The perforations …. you can get softer (textured leather options) but I don't think that extends to the steering wheel … I think that's only the seats.

    Good luck mate.

As has been said. Apply a leather cleaner on it and strip back the slimy product applied by the dealer. It’s not the wheel but the dealer who’s applied Armourall or some other god awful product.
