D3 Front wheel bearing and rack play
Dear All,
The 'check brake pads' warning had come on took the wheels off the D3 to check the sensors, the front sensor was out of its socket - and with the brass innards still there - pushed it back over the 'socket', but alas the check light stays on so will need a new sensor I suspect. Checked all the pads to find them OK. But I digress, the RH front wheel had significant bearing play when the wheel was pushed and pulled top and bottom in the usual checking manner; then pushing and pulling back and front of the wheel noticed that there was about 10mm play in the steering rod, with the play looking to be inside the boot visible towards the middle of the car near the underside guard, rather than next to the wheel. Two questions: 1. Is the steering rod play likely to be fixed by an adjustment, or a part replacement; and, 2. Should I do both front wheel bearings or just the offending RH unit?
I see the Timken front bearing units getting a good wrap in other posts here. BTW, the car has done 453,000 km, so a bearing failure was not unexpected.
Thanks in anticipation.
