What would happen if a prop shaft failed?

With some 4x4 vehicles you can still dive in 2wd after removing a prop shaft or drive shaft. What would happen with a D3 or D4? Would any of the terrain modes fully lock the centre diff to allow this to work?

Rock crawl will for at least a while providing the front wheels are basically straight ahead.

I think it would be a rarity for a shaft to fail unless you ignore the warning signs/sounds, beauty of an IRS vehicle is the shafts have very little lateral movement so dont stress the joints as much as a live axle vehicle does.

More likely to have a CV joint fail but with the same consequences.

So if a CV failed in a remote area, is it feasible to remove the full drive-shaft, then drive out in rock crawl mode?

You couldn't get up enough speed to climb dunes and the diff disengages at the slightest provocation but you might be able to travel some distance slowly and in short stints.

I would leave the driveshaft fitted but have not had to try getting mobile with a busted CV. Others have given-up when someone's around to tow them out, including a busted rear CV on a vehicle fitted with an e-diff which I thought would have been more successful than it apparently was.

most likely not as you'll have a bloody big hole in the side of the diff for all the oil to fall out. Wont last long with no oil
