    Should I do it myself?

This is one for the mechanics...

The front output seal on my TC is leaking as needs to be replaced. I originally thought " no worries, just remover the prop shaft, replace the seal and done" then learned you need to pull apart the case to change the seals.

I've done a bit of research and know that the rear seal can be done by removing the case half, but the front seals require all the bits to be pulled out and replaced.

I got a quote for about $800 from the local Indy, which is fine, but as the parts are $50 seals and $200 in oil I'm kinda keen to do it myself if I can. I also like learning about the vehicle in case something goes wrong.

I don't have a hoist and if I did it myself it would be on a driveway on my back. I've changed the fuel pump, and removed and replaced the 300Tdi in my old D1 a few times for clutches (easier than removing gearbox without a hoist). I'd consider myself handy with a spanner and torque wrench but nervous when it comes to tolerances on moving parts, ie. I'm hesitant to replace crown and pinion gears in a diff due to the high chance me not setting backlash correctly.

    My questions are:
1- How heavy is the case, can it be removed, and more importantly reinstalled, by one person lying on their back?

2- can I remove one half of the case, replace the seal, put the case back together, flip it and remove the other half of the case etc, or do I have to manually remove and replace each part. I'm a little scared of stuffing it up, though if worst comes to worst I can always take the case up to the Indy's shop and get them to fix it.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Dan

Not sure about your car specifically, however i have removed the TC from my D1 and had to pull it all down to fix a broken shaft.

Pulling it out was not easy. I ended up welding up a bracket that held the TC and then screwed to my jack.

I have 2 inches of lift and 33inch wheels and i could only just get the TC out while on jack. Smaller cars may have problems.

Everything about the TC is big and heavy.

If you make a good setup to hold the TC safely then i say go for it yourself man. Even if you get it out and do something wrong, take it to your mechanic while out and he will charge you heaps less to do the seal.

Its a D3 and my understanding is the TC is a little smaller than the LT230. (Edit: not sure if its any lighter though)

I should add I do have a welder and can make up a jacking bracket if need be.

You sound like you’ll be fine. Get it up on stands to give you room to work. Use a trolley jack to lower it out and back in then weight isn’t an issue.
As for the disassemble and reassemble, I’d check the manual and make a call. I’d have thought it would be straight forward disassemble, pay attention to orientation of parts and reassemble.

I suggest that you also replace the input shaft seal while the TC is out, but be careful not to push the seal in further than it is meant to go otherwise an oil drain hole will be exposed causing oil to leak, then needing another new seal.

    Should I do it myself?

The Magna Steyr TC is not that heavy but I would use a trolley jack and 2nd set of hands to help get it out. I have one under the house.

I would also look at replacing the input gear.

I think these need to be removed about every 100,000km to re-lubricate the trans output/TC input. Here’s why, dry as a bone after 240,000km.

I only have two of own hands and I keep them at the end of my arms, not sure what the neighbours would say about you keeping a 2nd set of hands under the house?

Re removing the TC - I fully agree with doing it yourself, just study up on all the steps and this forum and others are a great source of info, these TC's are not only used in Land Rovers, so other "brand" forums are also a good source.

I also agree while you have it out to replace all seals and check what you can - far better than having to pull it out again.

    Cheers
