Thanks mate! This is very useful.
I will do a search here and find all the oil specification (take a look through the owners manual too) to understand what Oils to buy.
I might try and find the original thread on ‘how to’ oil change you speak off.

    All great stuff!

Oh and like you, after getting some confidence here I think I will plan on keeping mine as well. I really can’t think of anything on the market to my liking to swap for. As you said the future defender is an option ‘keeping an eye out’ for that one.

But then again I waited to see what the D5 was going to be like and well we all know how that worked out 🤦*♂️

    Welcome to the forum

We've owned my D4 for ~100,000 kms (~4 years) and would now not go for anything else but another LR.

Servicing is quite easy and compared to similar equipment (?? don't even know what comes close), I think very reasonable. If you are handy with a spanner, most things you can do by yourself.

I did have the extended bumper to bumper warranty ($3500) that ran out last December, this has paid for itself about 3 times over. I'm now in uncharted territory, but I figure with a simple preventative maintenance strategy we can continue.

I'm running the OEM 19" rims with Maxxis AT980s, there are a few AT tyre choices in that range, but not much in the 20" that I'm aware of. 18"s there is a lot more choice obviously.

There is an awesome array of aftermarket and genuine parts available, cheaper or at similar prices to the UJV (Universal Japanese Vehicle), excellent support from forums such as this and IMHO nothing much wrong with these cars.

I will be hanging onto my MY11 SDV6SE for the foreseeable future, if I was forced to trade, I would most likely try for one of the later model D4's, also not quite warmed to the "D5" yet...

    additional key items:
    - Transmission flush and steel pan / sep. filter upgrade at about 150K kms, consider the valve block as well (just rebuilt mine)
    - Front - rear and transfer case oil changes every 50K-75K kms (especially when towing / off roading)
    - sway bar bushes replace at 150 or 170K with Poly - they get hammered a lot
    - Air compressor service / maintenance
    - rear tailgate door actuator
    - alternator
    - engine coolant outlet - its plastic and needs to be changed before it splits (game over if it fails), mine's survived 182,000kms, but I will be swapping it out for a new one very soon.

    Cheers,

    Eric

If it makes you feel any better, I bought a 2006 D3 TDV6 that has currently done over 520,000km (12,000 of those km are mine). It is in very good condition and was serviced roughly every 10,000kms by the previous two owners (1st owner ran tour groups in it, 2nd owner was the Baptist church), and they replaced things as required.

When this one eventually dies I will be looking for either a new Defender, or (if that turns out to be a dog) a late model D4. There will be a time when repairs escalate and become uneconomical to fix for the age of the vehicle, but I think you are a ways off yet.
Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.

I've got a 10/2016 D4 and love it and agree with all said above. But got a shock today with the cost of the second full service (41K) at an indie I've known and used on and off for years.
Oil at 22 bucks a litre when I can get it for something less than $10 from supacrap. Horrendous price for the after market fuel filter at $121... I can get the OME for less, much less, from the stealer.
And so it goes on until $330 for the technician!!!
I counted a max. of 2 hrs from when I first arrived there 'til I left and the technician who certainly knows his job, didn't start work on it until half an hour after that. He spent a max. of 1.1/2hrs on the work.
But I did pick up a few points by watching him and won't go there again.
Best thing was at least I saw all the filters changed and new oil going in which I couldn't have done at the stealers.
Love Landies generally but it seems we're ripe for the picking when it comes to servicing.

I think you've answered your own question numerous times,,

There really is nothing else on the market that does what your Landmark does,,
and yes sometimes the servicing reflects that.

Find a Mechanic you trust and leave the hard yards to him,,

I'm sure your Family will thank you for it..

You have a bit of overlap here. Don’t need rods if you go either LLAMS or IID as both can do preset remote height adjustments. Rods are a waste so go one of the others.
If you’re a regular height adjuster, LLAMS is easiest. If you’re an occasional like me then the IID has preset height adjustments you can use but requires you to connect the module and open the app to set, versus the simple dial of LLAMS. As I only use it once every few months for off road trips IID was a better financial for for me.

    Yes absolutely.
I sort of posted a list of everything and haven’t really decided which way to go. Just listing all the options for now.

I am leaning towards Llams. I like hardwired buttons!

We brought a 11/2015 build HSE in Feb 16. It has been an amazing family vehicle, so much so, my girls have named it Hoppy.

Hoppy has done numerous trips, including the canning stock route, northern Flinders and a ton of stuff up here in the top end. We have done a lot of these trips on the factory 20's but recently purchased a set of Tuff Ants for the more remote, trickier stuff.

We are also under a corporate service plan so currently get the servicing completed either when the Kay's are up or the car tells us. Once the extended warranty is over I will be completing services myself.

Initially we thought might do about 15k and year, but we are currently at 63k after just over 2 1/2 years, so Hoppy is addictive.

Only issues had so far are a dodgy battery, which the Traxide system seems to have been keeping afloat for over a year and two electronic park brake failures. I believe the second was due to poor workmanship, but as the second repair was micromanaged by LR themselves I'm sure it's done right this time.

I hope you get to enjoy your D4 as much as us and even everyone else on here. It's really a pleasure to own one of these. Let the haters hate, it's only because they are jealous and wish they had the balls to step out of the Thai built crowd.
