Just use the LR oil, then you have nothing to worry about.
Not a massive cost difference for peace of mind.
Just my 2 cents worth
May have brought up before but the US guys use Royal Purple Syncromax which is a manual box fluid for use where an ATF is recommended, it is available here at about $40/ltr which probably isnt much less than the LR oil.
Surely Penrite would have a suitable fluid, the US indies seem happy to use and recommend the syncromax so it must be suitable ?

True but surely there is a more common alternative.

SubscriberNo there isn’t. Just use LR coming from the guy who always looks for alternatives. It’s 1.5l. Save the other 0.5l for the next change.
That’s what I’ve done. Reduces the cost a smidge.
Given the change frequency it’s not THAT bad

$80/L v $40/L, big difference. A lot of the US owners and independent workshops use and recommend the royal purple so there must be something in that, its only a re-badged shell oil after all and there is a Ravenol equivalent to the Shell TF 073.

SubscriberAnd if it was for the engine and I was putting in 6L every 10,000km at that price then yes I’d be shopping. It’s the equivalent of $120 per change and for most people it occurs once or twice in their ownership. I spend that filling the fuel tank each week so really, it matters how much?
I get the principle of the thing, and I’m the first to use alternatives, but it’s just not worth the trouble for the transfer case - especially given the limited alternatives available in Aus.

Thats it, the principle. Just smells of apple inc to me, but if the guys in the US are using the RP Syncromax long term with no ill effects then to me it must be a viable alternative.
