Thread: Front Drive Shaft

So what to do here. My independent LR specialist services my car which is one month away from being out of warranty. He tells me the right hand front CV shaft needs replacing, among other things. I take it to the dealer who inspects and states they could not fault it. Someone is wrong, I wonder who?

I will take it back to the indie and get him to show me what he thinks is the problem and then go back to the dealer again and show them. Why does it have to be so bloody difficult? Anyone have any other ideas?

Why? These are pretty tough items that take a lot of destroying and are not known as a weak item in the Disco.

Is it knocking when you turn a full lock circle? That’s the way CVs let you know they’re done.

Are the boots in tact? If you have been driving with an exploded boot and no grease for ages then there is a cause and effect issue which will negate warranty.

I had a front boot go on me and it was a hell of a mess and attractive to every bit of sand and grit. I patched the boot with a bike tyre cut out and cable ties after shoving some grease in there. Next service a proper boot kit went on it and new LR grease (different grease for inner and outer) that comes in the kit following a thorough clean. Good as gold.

In some bends there is a slight grinding noise so I asked them to check, also warranty out in a month so I asked the indie to give it a good check all over, just in case. Boots all look good. I did shatter the left front drive cv joints in the Simpson last year, boots in perfect condition both ends of shaft but un-driveable. Dealer showed me the shaft after removing and sending back to LR, hell of a mess, so I was worried about the right one as well.

Thing only has 80,000 km on it but falling apart. They just had to replace the throttle body and motor due to leaks, earlier this year they had to fix numerous oil leaks around the motor, rear door seals leak that much dust on dirt roads they might as well not be there. Real pity, I love driving the car and it goes well, uses bugger all fuel for the size of it and tows the van really well. I am just loosing my ability to trust it staying on the road and not costing me a fortune once warranty is up. Looked at the new Amarok with the bigger motor but not available until March/April next year.
