A few years back Nulon had the ZF on its list and later it magically disappeared. ZF lists compatible fluids, that is the only list I woulod follow.

i just bought a litre of LR special transfer box oil from Southerns..list price $94.32 discounted to $89.95, only because there was 500ml left from a previous oil change.Next time will use the LG6.
Does that mean that the Penrite BMV is also suitable do you think?

Again has been discussed at length - Steyr do not list LG6 as being suitable but hey - its your transfer case.

Is $130 in transfer case oil every 120,000km such a big deal.

Presumably you are changing the transfer case at a more regular interval like all your other fluids?

I do yes (84,000 km) - but the LR service interval for the tfr case is a lot less than that for the gearbox.

Now I do not know if LG6 is ok for the tfr case or not - I know that WA organisation swears by it but others have said LG6 has the wrong friction modifiers in it for the Tfr case - I dont know but it looks different, it smells different and is slightly difference in viscosity - you pay $100k for a new LR then want to skimp on oils - the logic escapes me. These other oils will not kill boxes in the short but who knows about the longer term, they might work or they may not who knows.

Recently I was told by a LR Indy of some repute, that Rock Oil TF870 is the same as IYK500010, 'special transfer case fluid', is identical, even down to the smell. Significant difference in price too. It is sold through Rovacraft and I believe some places like Imparts who deal with bmw etc also stock it.

It is listed also for the bmw transfer cases, 2003 to 2013.

Now this may be correct but I am staying with the LR Special Oil for the moment.

LG6 specifies it meets the IYK standard and therefore could be used in the transfer case. Saying that, it’s the same argument of Penrite BMV into the gearbox, so why is it acceptable for LG6 in the transfer etc.

I’m quite over the discussions in a whole. I've been robbed.

Yes I agree - these discussions come up at least once a year or so - the new tight arses want to skimp on oils but the old salts are not convinced and want to stay with what is known to work.

Is IYK a standard or is that just the first three digits on the LR part number?
