KO2s

hi all,

Always been a fan of the AT tyres and this was my first experience on KO2's on my D3 (vehicle bought with these tyres already fitted on) and not a fan. They maybe great tyres but the noise is annoying particularly low speeds 40-70kms. I still have enough tyre to last a while but am thinking more to replace to a quiter tyre like a AT, my dilema is i have 4x KO2 with steel wheels and one alloy spare with a diff tyre.

But I would rather put up with a bit of noise,than have tyre issues.

That's strange - I have a D4 2014 HSE - no droning on mine. How old are yours? How many Ks? Mine are 265/65/18s. Who knows, even profile may influence sound heard inside the cabin.Heaps quieter then the very worn Grabbers. I thought they did have some noise once though - but I had a rear window cracked open! I have a half sized roof platform though which does add to the noise a little. Not at 60KMH though. Drone could also be a diff or drivetrain sound. Michelin changed the KO2 product too, but I did not have them before, so I don't know if there was a noise difference. IMO newer designs are quieter when new. But its also likely IMO that when worn newer designs will be noisier - to encourage consumers to replace their tyres earlier than is necessary. Not a Green attitude but that is today's world. don't know the differences between the previous KO2s and the ones we buy today.

Many others on here have the same issue in D4’s with these tyres.

I agree though everyone’s hearing is different.

Well my BFGs are currently quieter than the tyres delivered with my D4. My original factory wheels and tyres have under 13,000 km usage.

I recommend putting your vehicle in neutral at your 60 KMH noise point. It's possible you are hearing a drivetrain harmonic. From a noisy CV joint perhaps. I've had an issue with such a noise in my wife's RX Lexus. The CV joint was replaced. You could sense/hear it at about 78 to 85 KHM. Well I could - it never bothered my wife. Lexus replaced it.

On the road with the wind behind my D4, the vehicle with the BFGs is remarkably quiet. hence why I am surprised you are saying the BFGs have quite some noise and at a particular speed.

Im looking for a new set and hoping someone with experience can tell me if there are any silent tyres they have found?

In reality I’m far less likely to go or want to go digging in any mud, I will go off-road but the vast majority will be on a beach and only occasionally on rocky roads so it begs the question why I don’t just go highway tyres.. I guess I like to have the option when needed

pirelli ATR are much quieter than Grabbers. HIGHWAY Tires!!! NOOOOOOO my replacement disco had them. lowering tire pressures killed 3!

The sidewalls were not suitable in my very breif and nasty experience. I knew I would have to replace them. I was told by a few they were fine for a trip to and from Perth. They were except for all the 4wd parts!!

Hi, I have Pirelli ATR + fitted to my D4 on TuffAnt 18’s and have done about 2000k and they very quiet on road. I Previously had Nitto Terra Grappler’s fitted on factory 20’s and the Pirelli’s are heaps quieter.
With Nitto’s I thought that I had a diff problem with the whine that was generated.
i am going to Lorella Springs in June and if the ATR+ perform as well as the ATR’s I have had in past I will be very happy.

I have KO2's as well on my D4, and yes tyres from new, they do drone between 45 to 60km/h - especially on overrun slowing down to lights. Wheel alignment and regular wheel rotation made no change. But saying that very happy with the tyre as a compromise, both on and off road.

I was running Maxxis at980 on the 19 inch rims, they hummed as expected for an AT, similar to the many d697's I had on other vehicles.
Now on 18 Tuffant have a slightly less aggressive Maxxis 771 in 285 60 18 ( kind of like d697's) and barely hear them. There is a couple versions, mine being 123 load rated.

My ko2’s started like that, just noisy in that speed bracket but as they are now much more worn I can’t get them to shut up no matter what speed I do. Probably helps scare the wildlife away so that’s a plus
