    Temps - these ok?

After 2 hours at ~110km/h towing a 1.6T camper trailer on 50% flat 50% hills (I’d estimate about 5% grade on average). Ambient temp was approx 25 deg C.

    Thoughts?

I saw 132 degree oil temp at 25 ambient towing a 1 tonne camper at ~110kph on dash (~104 real), so yours is much better.
I’ve recent switched to Penrite “extra ten” 5W-40 oil and wonder if that’s a factor in the increased oil temp. It settled to around 122 degrees average. My coolant was in the 90s most of the time.

    Ice cold.

    I tow 2.8T at 100km/h & see coolant at 100 to 108 deg & oil at 135 sometimes.

At 100 with a 1.6t block of flats on the back I see oil > 120 and coolant > 110 often on steep grades. On the flat in 5th it settles at oil 106, coolant 95-96 and in 6th I see oil 102 and coolant 98-100. I've never really watched the consumption difference between 5th and 6th, so I tend to sit in 5th with the cruise control on.

The oil temp is primarily friction heat while the coolant is cylinder/head temperature. EGT is about even in both gears.

All well within normal parameters anyway.

Just been Perth to Esperance and back. Towing our 1.5 camper. Coolant low 90s most of the time peaking to 100 on longer climbs.

Can’t see that in your picture. My gearbox sat around 80-90 degrees C most of the time to which I’m more than happy with.

Your temps are fine when compared to mine. I'm trying to hunt down the cause.

140+ for engine oil when under loaded conditions at 100kph- eg hill or headwind towing around 1.8t camper
coolant temps remain around the 90C. This is at ambient temp pf less than 20C
Once 140C is reached performance is restricted but not sent into limp mode. No warnings, no increase in temp gauge on car and no codes raised.

Seems to have only have become an issue since installing a bullbar, winch and lights.

With coolant temps running fine could this be a case of lack of airflow over motor? There is supposably a standard fitment engine oil cooler on top of motor beneath the oil filter.

If I sit on 90kph I can keep the oil temp around 135C.

What's it like when you're not towing?
Once thoroughly warmed up, my oil and coolant track pretty closely when tooling around town (or at 110 on the freeway).

There is an oil cooler in the V under the oil filter. The coolant spiggot on that goes into the rear socket in the coolant outlet. Wonder if the cooler is obstructed in some way?

Not towing and it will sit on 125 or so.

Travelling over the last few days I have tried without the spotlights, without the winch (with the lights)- both no improvement.
Today without the winch along with the front number plate removed and it seems to have improved, sitting on 100kph and 135C or less was the norm. A couple of final long pulls up hills did see temps up to the 140 at the very top (coolant also increased to 104). If I wasn't monitoring I would never have known as the down hills on the other sides reduced the temps while not having to give much throttle. It does take a while to drop though as there appears to certainly be some heat soak in the engine.

This makes me curious as to the airflow, the majority of the radiator is actually fed from the lower section of the bar, it's actually shrouded and encased somewhat to separate it from what enters through the grill. Removing the number plate would have done little more than change pressures and air movement behind the bar as directly the channel where the number plate sits is no radiator.

It is in for a service as soon as it can be booked in and I will be having the plastic coolant housing that cracks replaced at this time (preventative). Will be asking to ensure a complete flush and obviously fresh coolant. In the meantime am pondering over the whole airflow thing. Will load the winch back in and try again still without the number plate.....
