    Oily scum in coolant bottle.

Recently purchased a D4 2011 2.7 TDV6 with 256 Km. Coolant level in the tank was very low. Took about 3/4 L to raise to half way. Did not seem to loose any coolant on drive form Melbourne to Sydney.
The coolant bottle, above the fluid level, had a thin layer of black oily scum on the walls. This wipes off easily where you can get at. Any ideas on cause and what to do about it would be appreciated.

Hmmm. Oil in the water can indicate a blown head gasket worst case. Best case, what colour is the coolant? I’ve seen cases where coolants of different types/brands have been mixed and this causes a brown scum to form.

If coming from the oil cooler then be aware that replacement gaskets / seals are available for the 2.7, ie there is no need to replace the cooler/filter housing assembly.

At 265k Graeme, I'd be replacing the whole shebang. It is a labour headache so only want to-do it the once...😁

Not in my experience, no. I have replaced many engine oil coolers over the years....
