Has the secondary turbo's inlet isolation valve been checked?
Hi Guys,
I know that this has been written about on several occasions but i have a major issue with the secondary turbo on my My12 SDV6 HSE Disco 4.
I had the restrictive triangle of death come up the other week. Took it to the mechanic and had him diagnose the problem.
Codes P22D3 and P22CF came up. So in light of this situation we had the oil return pipe changed for the new i'm not going to kill your turbo version and also had the Turbo solenoid replaced.
Got the Vehicle back and bang 2 weeks in and same triangle same fault codes. took it back and looks like the turbo it on the way out.
So in finishing is there anything else I should be looking at before I go for the rip the Body off and replace it at the cost of a small car ??
Thanks in advance Dave![]()

Ive got the similar error codes on my 2010SDV6SE, but my secondary turbo is less than 2 years old, so i struggle to believe its the actual turbo.
Mines throwing those two codes intermittently for the past two weeks, and when not, the turbo runs fine, no white smoke or loud noises (usual death-symptons for turboes)
Check the solenoid as Graeme suggests, and the secondary air control valve (front drivers side low behind the intercooler) for sticking bits. Finally the actuator at the turbo may need some tlc, but its a bugger to get to.
The new oil drain pipe, whilst a good preemptive measure, will not solve the P22 code.
Secondary turbo on the 3.0 is a VVT, the linkage that is solenoid controlled varies the vane angle on the exhaust side to control boost pressure.
See photo. The actuator can get stuck either at the black box end or at the pivot point. The black box is the secondary actuator controller. Theres a servi motor in there that drives the actuator to vary the vanes on the exhaust side, this varies airflow and hence pressure on the clean air turbine side20190813_210152.jpg
What year model was that fitted to and you're sure that's the secondary rather than the primary? They were certainly fixed initially.

Thanks for advice. The big issue I have is on start up there is some white smoke. Once the actuator valve shuts it stops then re appears at about 2800rpm which makes me think that the turbo is on the way out. whilst tat the moment there is no noticeable change in the noise of the Turbo I feel its only a matter of time.
Has full throttle been held long enough for the smoke to stop being produced each time? Quite a lot of oil can build-up in the inlet isolation valve and in the bottom of the intercooler but if the smoke doesn't stop after 30 seconds or so of full throttle then there may be a problem.

Hi Graeme,
I will give this ago this afternoon when I finish work.
Another concern is that when my wife drives it (Like a Nanna) even if its just for the day then I drive it the exhaust produces a fair amount of smoke. Then seems to clear and then is the same the next day etc etc etc.
I do not think it should be producing the amount of exhaust smoke as it is. Maybe its just me
