Thread: A Word of Warning

When I had new tyres fitted I insisted that they be hand tightened.

It's an issue that has been discussed many times here. Rattle guns kill the LR nuts as they have a cover on them that does not go well with rattle guns and the cover gets destroyed giving you the problem described.

Exactly. The cause as i understand it the workshop rattle guns are set to max torque. I use my rattle gun set on 2 (out of 4) on the little wheel at the handle to run them up, then tighten by hand using a breaker bar. Undoing by same then run them off with the rattle gun.

With new tyres being fitted i always ask that they undo them manually.

Luckily a complete new set of genuine lug nuts is not going to break the bank.

I had that happen in Joondalup where the idiot tyre "fitter" rattled them up so hard I couldn't remove the nuts. Plus of course he didn't even bother stopping the gun before trying to fit it on the next nut.
They did pay for new nuts though and he disappeared. Now I always insist that "no gun" is put on worksheets when rotation and balancing is done.
I think that most of them have the same attitude as a sales assistant at Repco just down from the tyre place when I inquired about oil for the Puma engine.... "It's only a Landrover, stick any ****ing thing in it"!
Guess who doesn't get a cent out of me now for anything.

The owner got back to me with an offer to replace the damaged nuts which is great but you would think by now they would know how to treat wheel nuts like these. Nick

Just had my new Compo's and Pirellis fitted at the local shop.
They were excellent. All wheel nuts were tightened using a torque wrench. Top service!

You can get solid wheel lugs for a D3 / D4 just like with a Defender
