My D4 had a slight coolant leak last Sunday (Saturday was 800km from Noccundra Hotel to Farina Ruins, via Innaminka, the Strzelecki in 42 degrees and the Strze was VVV Rough) after a coolant top up took me on an enjoyable couple of days down through the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide, arriving mid afternoon Tuesday. Lunchtime Wednesday it decided to dump the majority of the coolant having not been driven since arriving the day before

Turns out I'd managed to split the radiator, thankfully the most excellent Pete from PCB LandRovers was able to fit me in and fix it. RACQ Ultimate Care flew me back to Brisbane and I head back down tomorrow to collect the D4 and continue my roadtrip home.

The transfer case is about 42kg and the gearbox is 57kg. I reckon with the right tools I can do that.

I'm still going to get some estimates to get it done, but the parts are getting harder to find, especially here where they aren't particularly common.
This might be an opportunity to check the play on the crank thrust bearings, by trying to move the crank back and forth woth the gearbox removed, and might be able to be mic'd or more likely measured with a dial gauge, although this might be a tiny bit out out as the bearing faces may be wet with oil, as manuals are more susceptible to thrust wear than autos. However this might be a can of worms 🪱 .

Made some brackets and mounted a 160w solar panel to my roof rack, panel is 144x66cm so takes up a little more than half the width and 2/3 the length but still room for a swag and kayak.
Fitted a victron smart solar regulator next to the auxiliary battery under the bonnet.

Finally fitted the Stedi ST4K I bought ages ago and happy with the button placement in the light control panel. Also designed my first 3D printed part to house 4 additional button switches for the other lights sitting in boxes I'm yet to mount

I had another two Pirelli AT plus tyres fitted, so four all round, and took it for a long test drive on Sunday and I'm really happy as there is virtually no road noise almost like driving an EV when cruising as the engine is so quiet all I hear is wind noise.

I hosed down the D3 and all my garden wall blocks with rain tank water as the rain had softened the bugs and mud on the car and the black algae/mould in the garden.

In the office today and looking at my car out the window I wondered how the solar panel was going, pretty happy with that.

So ended up being roughly $2500 landed for LR genuine clutch kit, flywheel and hydraulics. I've been quoted 8 hours, which I'm ok with. Workshop rates seem high, but I'm self employed and know what it costs to run a business. I'm happy to pay for this one.

So not cheap, but then cheaper than an auto rebuild.

    Hitachi compressor motor winding - 2010 D4

I decided to try and overhaul the 2010 D4 Hitachi EAS compressor. (not working since stolen). I cleaned and repacked the air dryer, even replacing the main filter by drilling out the rivet., and then pulled the motor cover off to find a stray wire sticking out of the windings!
I’ll prolly pull the motor from the D3 compressor (also recently stopped working and needing attention) - unless it too ist kaput! Has anyone rewound or repaired one of these compressor motors?

Till now never heard of an issue on the motor side it’s the most reliable motor in the LR lineup! Clean them up as per the 4x4 airseals video is the only usual maintenance
