Sorry for late replies, been busy with work and kids.

Took some calls to get info from the police - was found just 200 metres from where stolen, outside shops in a very busy traffic area (southern Gold Coast). I have handed out flyers to the shops with my contact, searched all the planter boxes, garden beds, carpark nooks and crannies, window ledges and any other hiding spots. Haven't found the key yet. I have put a notice on (newly found) Facebook Group for lost and found on the GC. Some replies but no find as yet.

Your problem may be - can the Gap tool program a key when you dont have a working one? (I've never been in that position but always used a good working key to program the next one)
    Thank you Tombie.
This is very useful to know.
Jaguar Land Rover Australia (Gold Coast) have had the car for about 6 weeks now. Normally I do everything myself, but with no GAP IID tTool as yet and other time pressures I gave in for the 'easy' and 'surefire' route of letting the d(st)ealer fix it. They insisted it needed a new KVM, and then found, once fitted that "it needed a new BCU". So they ordered one in and guess what - still can''t access the system, with the new KVM and BCU, they told me, and said they'd call the 'specialist in Sydney' - that was 12 days ago. I haven't paid anything yet, and will not pay a cent if they don't solve it. I am thinking of ordering an IID/GAP tool, telling the dealer to put my original parts back in and then having a go at unlocking it myself.
After that, I could have an auto locksmith have a go using the keys and fobs that the Dealer ordered from UK. Prolly should have done that in the first place. I am pretty amazed that JLR Australia have had this very common model LR for 6 weeks and cannot even access the system to switch it on, for want of the original key/fob (the police have unlocked the car for them - I wonder how?).
Thank you again Tombie. Your contributions to this forum over the years have been a vital reference for me with our D1 V8, D2 Td5 and now with this D4, and of course for many others. You are the wind beneath our. .... wheels?

2011 D4? The one you said was stolen & recovered in previous posts?

It does not need a new BCM or even a new KVM to program keys, even if all the existing keys are lost.

However it's very common for external issues to prevent the key programming from completing when using the dealer tool (SDD); a non-responsive steering column lock (which is a common enough problem), faulty IAU (sensor under the column to detect keys for emergency start) and also the RF receiver up in the roof (faults in the receiver or the wiring to it).

And in these cases someone not so familiar with how the whole keys/immobiliser system will assume it's the BCM or the KVM at fault.

In the last few months we resurrected several D4 & RRS which had sat around for months, because of similar situations (no key functions), and basically it was incorrect diagnosis in all of them. And we sorted it out and they drove the cars away.

    Thank you very much Cambo.
I am very grateful for this information.
Yes it is the 2011 (late 2010 build) D4 that was stolen last Dec, just after we bought it.
I'm on the Gold Coast, so I am trying to think of the best way forward with this.
Can I diagnose the Steering Column Lock, faulty IAU or RF receiver myself without special equipment?
Reprogramming keys when all keys are lost - do you know a way I can try to do this myself (e.g. get a GAP IID or something else - but I have heard that GAP IID cannot sync keys when all keys are lost (is that right? Is there another tool or way to programme the keys/fob to the the KVM?

Car sprung a diesel leak in an injector pipe at the injector end today. Weird as the pipe was new and had been in situ for two years since work was last done on it.

Took it into Dovers (WA) and they worked out where it was leaking and sorted it on the spot for me for free using a second hand injector pipe they had available. Great customer service as always. Problem solved.

Lucky you knew about it, guy on the FB group was asking about return line fittings earlier this week then i see a post from him saying his D4 had an engine fire destroying the car.
Obviously kept driving it knowing it was leaking.

I've threatened to do it, but it's never actually been bad enough to warrant carrying through.

Anyone successfully changed glow plugs on a 2.7? Sounds like a risky job getting them out.

Longer start time more noticeable this winter on cold mornings. Will try and test current draw.
