Thread: What happened to your D3/D4 today?

I drove it home after a service and also a new air con evaporator (& T/X valve). Mechanic says he now does - dash out, change evaporator, dash back - in 6 hours which is what he charged me in labour.

I suspect shaft seal but is probably minute.

Yesterday evening while rushing to the shops before they closed on wet roads, I hooked into a 90 degree corner a bit fast and I think the ABS/DSC/TC came on as I heard the ABS pump growl, and the car seemed to straighten a bit, but made it round the corner okay.

Today we did an oil change, adj EPB and tyre rotation.

Should have checked stock because I didn't have an oil filter, so I'll do that next service.

A couple of years ago I had a flat on the rear. I had Tyrepower fix it for me. The next time the wheels came off was last year when I had Tyrepower put a new set of boots on.
At the time, they broke 2 sockets (and I destroyed the factory wheel brace) trying to get off the back wheel and damaged some lug nuts in the process. I pointed out they were the last place to touch that wheel so it must have been one of their monkeys with the uga dugga. They swore black and blue they always use a torque wrench.

Come today. I had to use a 600mm breaker bar with all of my 92kg bouncing up and down on it for each and every lug nut. All 20 of them. Now a basic calculation sees that as requiring more than 540NM for each lug nut. Torque wrench my arse! Lying sods.

Anyway, new Tuffant one piece lug nuts on so at least I've replaced the ones they damaged and they all match.

I have the Ryobi 18V rattle gun and on setting 2 it does 120Nm and a touch more on the torque wrench for 140Nm. It’s a surprising little amount in reality.

I had my 10 year old torque up some of the lugs for me just to show him how little force is actually required.

A few years ago I wanted a smaller rattle gun. I found a little 1/2" alloy Repco branded unit at the local cashies. It has a switch on the back with 3 torque levels for both forward and reverse. It's ideal for spinning nuts on using the lowest setting.

I'm just so over people lying. If they'd said "we torque up the lug nuts with a 3/4" pneumatic gun" I'd have expected trouble and not been surprised when I got it. Using the same gun they shattered 2 sockets trying to get the nuts off. They also ruined 2 of the nuts, then blamed me for over-torquing them.

I won't be using them for tyres again, but their mechanic who does alignments is an old school Landrover mechanic, so I'll keep going back for alignments.

So I now have a bucket of spare nuts, of which 18 are looking pretty ok. When I bought the Tuffants, they had a special on packs of 5 sets, so not only do I have a bucket of factory spares, but I have a spare set of Tuffants. That should keep me in lug nuts until it cracks a timing pulley, breaks a tensioner or lunches another crank.

Hence I have a very nice relationship with my Tyre store.
