I’ve got the same problem with my 2010 d4 however it’s only the horn that is intermittent and this is the funny thing it’s only when the outside air temp goes over 25. Has me baffled but I’d say a bit of contact cleaner could be the go.

    Re the Squealy Pig noise.

I do not know if LR kept the same arrangement as the D1.5 but there was a LR Bulletin out for rectifying this & it worked.
The shaft & a dry Rubber Bush make the squeal

The fix entailed slipping the column out a bit after disconnecting the Steering shaft UJ at the lower end & the bracketing at the firewall. A slotted PVC sleeve was inserted over the shaft at the rubber bush through the firewall & plenty of grease applied to it (like a handful). Stick it all back together & Robert was me Mum's Bro. Lasted for 20 + years & it may still be ok today if I knew where the bloody D1 was.

Not sure whether I still have the bulletin or just a part thereof.

23/04 EDITED. Google for LR Tech Bulletin 57/04/95/EN Requires Bush & Gaiter.
But you can get around it without replacing those & using your own bits.

    Bulletin was issued 01/11/95

I’ve just got the dashboard airbag warning light with B0001-1B AF code. Assuming clock spring will be the likely culprit here? I’ll try the cleaning route first.

I haven’t had that one. I had the side airbag error. A little electronic contact cleaner/lubricant on the connector resolved it

Intermittent horn / CC buttons - rotary coupler ("clock spring")?

Update- took the clock spring off and there’s a clear sticker you can remove over some access hole. Gave it a big blast out with contact cleaner turning the access hole to different positions and all the harness connections.

Reinstall and after connecting battery cleared the driver airbag fault and it did not come back. It was a permanently reoccurring fault prior to that.

    Hopefully it stays like that.

Nice that LR has alignment marks on the steering wheel and steering column so you can’t get that wrong.

Update - the drivers airbag light is back on so new clock spring will be next repair item.

And all the other steering wheel switches don’t work.

New clock spring ordered last Thursday from AF arrived today. Is a made in China unit but absolutely identical in every way including decals and lock key to the original I removed.

Fitted and all functions back to normal.

Country driving with no cruise control is no fun.

Now a 20 minute job with recent practice.

Update: the LR branded original unit also has China stamped on the back of it. Nearly 14 years old, not bad.

Truth be told, they probably made the original.

Yep I’ve got the old one on my desk and it’s identical except for LR stamp in the plastic case. I’m totally confident it’s from original manufacturer. There’s a break off centering key for installation both have.

Local price from LR dealer was $582. From a Indy parts supplier $494.80. From a wrecker he was trying to sell me from a wrecked 08 for $250.

From AF £88.61 plus shipping so well less that $250 although I got a few other items.

AF don’t offer any other options so I work on basis they have done the homework on what gives them least headaches.

Easy to see it would cost close to $800 for a dealer to replace which is scary. You’d be crying. Literally can get the steering wheel off in 15 minutes now.

I’d love to buy local but………
