    SDV6 Rocker gasket leak

On holidays with the family and noticed some fine oil in the engine bay.

dropped into the local independent whom advised its the rocker cover gaskets.
crappy time of year with everyone going away and big waits on parts with Xmas and new year.

He advised about 14 hrs to replace both sides and can with great difficulty carry out the work without lifting the body. Car is 2016 with 66,000k’s which has been serviced 3 times in last 18 months. Manufacture warranty ran out in Feb this year. It’s almost new so not impressed.

Firstly I have no reason to doubt the local Indy who was very helpful, but just gathering info. does 14 hrs sound right?. As there is no dealer or Indy in my home town and this one is one of the closest and is still 1200 k’s from home (Toyota/cowboy country). I have no convenient options, even if I didn’t need my car on holidays and it wasn’t the week before Christmas.
Is his advise to keep and eye on it and get it in some time in the new year sound and not to be concerned...yet? She’s still not leaving her mark so I’m guessing it’s ocurred in my recent travels.

will I be right to travel 1200ks back home, use around town and the drive another 1200ks when the work can be scheduled? (Mrs in the background saying we should have brought a prado)

all my fathers Defenders always leaked, but how common is this type in a D4?

secondly he found the lower control arm bushes are shot ( same day different issue), except these were replaced under warranty exactly 12 months only 6,600 k’s earlier.

    Merry Christmas.

66000 k seems premature for rocker cover gaskets. Mine done 300000k before they started leaking and even then I replaced them because the oil would find its way to the exhaust manifold and smell.
Depending on oil spray, you may have a cracked inlet manifold. Post up Pictures if possible.

At that age and kilometres it would qualify for good faith at the dealer and under the ACG.

Approach LR and ask nicely but firmly.

Heavy use of the throttle especially above 2500 rpm will hasten the worsening of the split and eventually airflow faults will occur, so drive gently when you can to make it last longer.

Hang on. Is it a gasket leak or a split intake manifold. If it’s a gasket, who cares aside from the oil leak. It won’t be that at that Km I’d not have thought. I’d have said it was a split manifold if you’re getting a fine mist of oil in the bay. Manifolds are know to split. My advice, get it back to a CBD somewhere and have a couple of opinions.

Note if you intend to ask LR for help be prepared for a battle.

You will be told to take it to a LR dealer for a start.. so you might as well do that straight away rather than go elsewhere..which will incur diagnostic costs..up to 400 bucks is std I believe...then you'll have to battle LR Customer Service Dept...worse than dealing with Centerlink in my experience.

But yes.. if you are are persistent and patient they may well assist if it's had dealer service throughout.

I'm not so took our car back b 4 the dealer costs racked up.

With LR Cus Serve it's a risky choice to seek their involvement but then again the cost of repairs may warrant giving it a go.

Def sound like a high pressure oil release tho.

    Never dealt with CustCare.

Just straight to dealer, no diagnostic charges and jobs just done regardless of being out of warranty.

Check that it's not the plenum to throttle body o ring. the tell tale is oil on the top radiator hose. The other culprit can be the o rings at y piece where the throttle body enters the manifold. The tell tale there is oil in the valley and on the red glow plug lead covers.

In any case, doesn't happen often with low k vehicles.

Same with LCAs they should last 120,000km. Check what they replaved them with, should be the oil filled bushes. Again the tell tale there is oil leaking/dripping from the arms. If not, then they're ok unless they're the solid rubber ones, in which case they're the wrong ones.

Yep, that to me looks like you need 3 new o rings, one for the plenum to throttle body and two for the tb to the manifolds, one each side. It takes about 20min to undo the tb and remove the plenum. The hardest part is wriggling the tb out from in between the manifolds. The egr pipes need to be disconnected, getting the clips back on is fun too, but doable.

Doesnt look like split manifolds to me. These o rings shouldn’t cost you more than $20 all up.
