    Discovery 4 2016 TDV6 Spare Key Problem

    Hi All,
Have just privately purchased a Discovery 4 but the seller couldn't find the spare key so provided a new genuine LR spare which was posted to me from interstate. I have tried to 'add the key' using the GAP Tool but receive an E7 fail message. Have emailed GAP hoping they can help.

Anyway the vehicle had to go into a LR Independent today for a job and they quoted $100 approx to code it. They rang to say the vehicle's KVM is locked and it would be another $5-600 to unlock. I put this on hold until I looked into it further.

Rang the Adelaide dealer hoping that the supply of a new key perhaps included coding considering the cost of them. Well they advised a new (KVM) module would be required as well at an additional cost of $1000+ coding labour!

Has anyone been down this path and able to offer the most cost effective solution please? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Matt
this quote is from the Gap manual. I suspect they will need the write a code for you which will require you to do a firmware update. They did in my case and it worked perfectly.

“If upon programming the process fails with Error E7, please contact us for assistance. This willoccur on certain KVM firmware version. Keys can be programmed but the process requires us to provide a file to relfash the KVM”.

I would not throw money at Land Rover yet!

    cheers

    Hi

My LR indy get caught with this also when they coded a spare key in for me. It needed a new KVM and the car was immobilised. They had to have the car *towed* to an LR dealer to get it fixed which embarrassed them and cost $ for both of us. It's a situation where the desired security can severely affect a products usefulness.

Update:I received a response from GAP which advised that there is is no support for the 2016 model D4 at this stage but that should change soon. So unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a cost effective solution to the problem at this point in time.

G’day Matt, I went through exactly the same issue.

Bought a 2016 , D4 last year and no spare key , the big store in Adelaide said something like $900, called in on an indi , said he was not confident to do the tricky bits.

So as we often go to Canberra , contacted the big store , who said “ yes bring the D4 in ‘$300”

Made an appointment , left the D4, wandered around a mall for couple of hours, went back to be met by a dude in a suit who said “ the electrickery needs some more smoke installed , $400 more”

Felt like jobbing the lot of them, but what can a bloke do.....so Matt , it is going to cost a pretty penny unfortunately .

Hi Matt, do you still need to replace KVM to pair the new key?

    Same KVM issue

Hey everyone. Just resurrecting this thread to add to it. The D4 I bought in October 2023 got stolen in December then recovered by police last week (June 2024). No keys…. Towed to dealer, they checked it all over and the report found it was mechanically all in good nick but, of course, dealer says a new KVM is needed to program the keys - ‘from the UK’ no less… watch this space…
BTW black D4 was painted white while out their as a stolen vehicle - haven’t seen it yet but apparently not a terrible paint job - interesting.
