Mine is having one installed at the next service on 17 September after discussion with the local indie. Our camper trailer will be around 1.4T once the jerry can holder is put on the rear of it.
Gday All ,
At some stage plan on towing something bigger than the camper trailer with the D3 , lucky for me the bride doesnt want a big van ,so thinking around the 2t up to 2.5 loaded , so just interested in what others have done in regards to auto oil cooler . is the standard set up up to the task or is it advisable to add an extra cooler.
Driving style will be some off road, but unlikely lots of soft stuff , just want the ability to go there if we feel the desire too.
If you have added an extra cooler , what type and where did you place it.

ive been through the costs of a new gearbox and from my basic understanding of the ZF is that overheating is a leading cause of their degradation.
there’s no down side that I’m aware of to fitting one, so for the low costs why not? Sub $500 I believe?
Our camper is roughly the same 1.4-1.5t fully laden. No additional cooler fitted and been all over, admittedly not in high extreme temps, but never had any issues. Towed all through Karajini, Exmouth and Monkey Mia, as well as Esperance and Bremer Bay at summer time, on gravel and blacktop.
Before that a smaller camper trailer from Perth to Melbourne and back, 8400km in 6 weeks.
Would be interesting to see what difference an additional ATF cooler will make.
The general consensus seems to be for optimum transmission life it is best to keep the oil temp around 80degC. As you go above 90degC as the normal operating temp then the life of the oil deteriorates quicker and should be replaced twice as often, and many people quote every 10degC increase above this again can half the life of the gearbox - seen through increased gearbox failure rates.
So if you are finding on hot days that when towing the oil temp is exceeding 90degC then definitely need to add a larger oil cooler.
As an oil cooler is cheaper to install than doing more frequent oil changes, then it is a definite yes if you want to extend the life of the gearbox.
I was talking to Bruce from Bruce Davis Performance Land Rovers a while ago about my D4 and he suggested that if I’m going to do lots of towing to get a 2nd trans oil cooler fitted. I never asked which brand, etc. Might do that tomorrow I think.

I put a PWR with 1/2" lines on the D2 cos caravan,,, I put it as far forward as possible to allow airflow around it, and 1/2 tubing and flex lines cos thats what the D2 lines are, so pressure should remain the same, then put a Derale 80 cuttoff temp valve in line so it runs on the standard setup untill it goes over 80,
the 2nd cooler and a better fluid replacement regime is about all you can do,
do the 6 speeds run unlocked a lot?
