Bluetooth enabled GPS receiver on dash?

    Hi all
    Yep me again

Going to put CarPlay into my 2012 D4(Harmon Kardon).. which means the integration route... I.e. the screen in between the vents stays and u press a button to go to CarPlay

The advice is to use a wired connection for your phone.. which is ok as QLD has harsh fines for event touching your dam phone

So I am going to USB connect it and put it in the centre console

So.. not a good spot for GPS reception

Anyone out there used gps Bluetooth units like the Garmin GLO

And has anyone mounted them in the back of the car rather that’s have it floating on the dash?

I am going to get drivesound to do the CarPlay thing.. and I could get them to add a USB power line to wherever ... but looking for your advice

    Cheers and thanks again
    Fozzie

Do you have tint? What type? Metallic will kill the signal pretty good!

Hide it under the dash top

    Hi Fozzie,
I have a Garmin GLO2 in my defer because I got a bit tired of the Navigator saying "Turn left back there" it updates your position every 1/2 second as opposed to every 10 - 30 seconds with the Iphone.
I've mounted mine up high on the front windscreen "behind" the mirror. It sits to the left of the mirror and I feed permanent power, it's great.

If you want to try it, I'd be happy for you to give it a test run. The battery used to last a good 8 hours, Just give me a PM.

    Cheers Glen

I have one of these with a non-current version of GNSS Commander on my Android phone and notebook. The current version has been set to not support non-GNSS Commander devices which are professional survey devices.

In both my MY03 D2a and the wife MY12 D4 we have wireless Apple CarPlay. The CarPlay Siri search function, Apple Maps and Google Maps apps work very well through the headunit. The GPS signal seems to be quick, strong and effective with our phones lying on the centre console (in my D2a the phone is usually resting agains the power window switches and in the D4 sits in the cupholders).
Of note is that my Alpine headunit in the D2a has it's own seperate GPS antenna that sits on the dash underneath my dash mat and plugs into the back, but I don't believe that our D4 has any such for it's Pioneer headunit.

Having owned and used both plug in USB cable Apple CarPlay and now moved to wireless, I couldn't/wouldn't go back. The wireless is fantastic and certainly worth the additional expense.
If you do go with a wired only setup, you might be able to convert it to wired using a CarPlay2Air adapter < CarPLay2Air - adapter for wired Apple CarPlay to wireless > like I did with my Alpine Halo9 headunit.
The only two advanges of wired CarPlay is:
    1. your phone charges as you use it - where wireless uses additional phone battery. Although I've found for my 40 minute commutes each way to and from work each day the additional battery drain has not been noticeable.
    2. it starts quicker - but only if you don't include the time for fiddling around plugging in - if you include this then it I about the same time or slower.

Why not first test out your setup without an additional GPS receiver to see if you actually need it?
