    Rear Overhang Rules (NSW)

Researching the idea of a rear box similar to Thule and started to look at the legalities - came across this

    https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents...rds/vsi-05.pdf

    which contains this image

    ROH - NSW RMS.JPG

So I have created this scenario for my D4

    D4 ROH.jpg

The above indicates that effectively I'm allowed to extend 600mm from the rear bumper - thus excluding the Thule rear Box

plus a large number of rear bike carriers I see on the road.

Is all this correct, or am I missing something?

    cheers!

I calculate 581mm from rear bumper.

    Wheelbase 2785mm x 0.6 (60% of wheelbase allowed) = 1731mm

    Subtract existing rear overhang (1150mm), therefore 1731 - 1150 = 581mm

However, that is for items that are listed as "Permanently attached" like a bull bar or tool box. If it's only temporarily affixed like a bike carrier it wouldn't be subject to the 581mm limit. You wouldn't have any dramas as far as I can see, the Thule Cargo box is attached only via the towbar and is easily attached/removed so is not a permanent fixture.

    cheers!
I've been googling exactly the same thing for the last 2 hours for my L320. Different dimensions but points from follow on post noted!

That is interesting - do you have a reference for the permanently vs temporarily attached?

    Cheers

This is quite clearly stated in the RMS document as per the original post. About halfway down page 2 of that document.

    Quote
"Note: Any object permanently fitted to a vehicle (eg bull bar, winch or equipment/tool box) is consideredpart of the vehicle and must be included within the applicable dimension limit (except for those specificitems excluded when measuring width)."

    https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents...rds/vsi-05.pdf

A bullbar or welded toolbox (for instance)that is bolted or welded to the chassis in some way obviously becomes part of the vehicle dimensions. If an object is attached via the towing coupling such as a box/ cargo thingy or bike rack it clearly can be removed in a short time and is only a temporary attachment.

The only thing you'd have to ensure is that your number plate is not obscured. Can always get an extra plate from the RTA as that is what they supply for bike racks if needed.

    Excellent comments - thanks!

Apart from the Thule, this may be the way to go .... with a standard box attached.
