    Steering column knock

    Riddle me this Batman ..

2016 D4 TDV6. 80,000kms. Full bash plates and rock sliders underneath incl on LCA’s.

Perfect feel when on road or easy off road. However - a distinct knocking feeling felt (not heard) up through the steering wheel when on sudden bumps or corrugated roads.

Fairly sure it’s not LCA’s as I’ve had a previous D4 which had LCA’s replaced and this def feels different.

    Feels rack / steering related.

    Anyone got any ideas?

I’m sure it will be LCA’s - mine didn’t feel the traditional way they fail but they were. Same symptoms as you describe.

Mine did that for quite a while, then the knocks gradually started over the larger bumps, particularly going slower, say less than 60km/hr.

I had similar symptoms recently also. Was an upper control arm and front sway bar link.
Very noticeable through the steering wheel on small rocks etc off road, but on road and generally felt fine.

Mine is the same and I too don’t think it is LCA as there is no knocking under heavy braking. I have a little play in my steering wheel also when stationary I am going to have a crack at replacing the lower steering shaft the knuckle joint can ware and cause issues as mentioned.

Front and rear sway bar mounts will be shagged. Replace with oem rubber. Tried the poly, too harsh. I fitted super pro adjustable rear links at the same time, reduced length by 8-10mm, makes for better towing and cornering stability.

Can you tell by inspection whether sway bar mounts are shagged?

Sorry, I should have been clearer, the sway bar rubbers will be worn out. You can tell by inspection if the rubber is flared out from under the mounts, and if theres a gap between the sway bar and the rubber, typically at the top. The rubber bushes are cheap as chips, easy to replace except for the passenger side front, but wouldnt be a landrover otherwise...
