Faults displayed on the message centre were - bonnet open (it was), low washer fluid, park brake fault. I will connect the gap tool and see what that tells me.
I'm thinking that I may need to reload the key as I had tried to load the key when I had another MJB installed.
In amongst all your drama this is the only thing I have experienced. I use a Nanocom and its language is to 'Learn' new keys. At least once having replaced a FOB battery I re-learnt the wrong key and so had one that did everything, including starting the car, and one that opened doors but would not start the car. That makes me think that the key & fob has not been associated with the security system around the key barrel.

Have you tried to load the key again?
    Cheers, Dale

Thanks all for the advice. Rereading the GAP manual, I'm wondering if the key reload process hasn't worked properly despite getting a success message at the end of the process. I hadn't noticed that the alarm indicator at the base of the tacho flashes continuously.

Today I tried reloading the key again - same result as before, no engine crank and the security alarm light flashing. This time I got a message B1D2113, which I can't find an explanation for. I also tried locking the car and letting it rest for 90mins, no change. If I can't start the engine with the kay am I going to need a visit to a dealer to reactivate the key or maybe the fault resides in the CJB?

Could also be a faulty instrument cluster. This can cause all sorts of problems and stop you from being able to start the car.

Before you cleared all the original faults, did you take a copy of them?

And is everything else plugged in like HVAC controls, audio system etc?

I didn't take a note of the original faults but I have learnt how to save the reports since. The front passenger seat is out, otherwise all of the components are installed. I have yet to check the connectors behind the centre console. There is the sound of a relay clicking when I turn the key to start, but I suspect that if the immobiliser system does not disarm properly then the engine won't start.

Hopefully it's just a dead relay! Keep up the fight. I like a few little fights from time to time. Helps with confidence later on

Today I checked the connections on the audio and aircon panels. Al plugs cleaned and reconnected - no change in presentation. No engine crank.
I went back to the ECM (engine control module) and refitted the original unit. This time - success! I was able to start the engine. I've tried a few starts to confirm it wasn't just a one-off piece of luck.
So after all the checking it appears to have been a combination of water leaking down the A-pillars and some dirty plugs at the rear left wheel arch. All of the original units are now reinstalled - ECM, MJB, instrument cluster.
Thanks everyone for the encouragement and suggestions. Now I have the park brake and a couple of engine injector defects to clear, a thorough service (filters, oil change) and I should have this machine back on the road after a couple of years sitting in a workshop.

Now that I have the engine running, it's time to do something about the smoke! Looking at the first of the pics from loanrangie you can see a light grey smoke which is constant with the engine running.
    At 760rpm the cylinder balance offset figures are #1 592, #2 1375, #3 750, #4 1375, #5 1031, #6 918. At 1500rpm all figures are 983.
Should I be running some injector cleaner through the system before I start thinking of new injectors? If I go the new injector path should I replace all 6?
Can these injectors be bench cleaned and reconditioned?
Thanks for any ideas - especially money saving ones.

I've never looked into it, but if you need injectors they should be available reasonably priced from someone who has replaced a motor.

    Cheers
