Where to next?? So far I've tried a spare instrument cluster and park brake module with no success, the same DTCs are logged.
I tried disconnecting the ABS electronic module - no change.
Am I missing a step when I try replacement units? Should there be a procedure to load the new unit into the system?
All of the DTCs that I'm getting are U prefixed, data communications codes.
Does the cluster require vin coding like other components do ? , do the comms codes point to any particular hardware or ECU ? My knowledge is basic on the electrics of these vehicles.
HI Loanrangie, The cluster can be fitted but I think it is VIN coded. I was hoping that by fitting a different unit that I would get at least a change in the fault codes - no luck! So today I have pulled all of the relays from the engine bay and bench tested them with a 12V power supply. all seemed ok.
I've tried hanging in a spare EPB module - no change.
This afternoon I was looking at the wiring again and shaking connectors. I got some response from the park brake this time. The brake motor ran while I was pulling up on the switch - good news. When I released the switch to the neutral position, the brake released. I've also tried flashing ECUs and reloading the CCF to no effect. I'm still getting the & HSCAN faults in the suspension and the HSCAN fault in the steering.
To me it still points to a CANbus fault - hopefully a broken wire.
Some good news at last. I started from then back of the car, checking continuity on on the CAN circuit. Got to the E-diff and found that although the plug looked secure, it wasn't fully engaged. Cleaned the contacts, resealed a bodgy looking repair and then reconnected. This plug is in a real awkward position and required a liberal coating of colourful language to get it fully home. as I've been checking the circuit, I have checked the DTCs at each stage. After the diff connector most of the DTCs have gone, the engine now starts and the parkbrake works. Happy days - time to celebrate!
I still have the C1A71-1C (rear right height sensor supply fault) and the park brake indication fault, so things are getting better.
Thats progress, i guess a lot of these issues came from the previous workshop that removed the body for the engine work.
Airmech, D3/4 are like Metros, a 737 crammed into a small tube, impossible to work on, an electrical nightmare (I know), but go like the clappers and are great freight aircraft.
My D4 has currently hit 275000 and have owned it since new, still drives like new and goes well. Expensive to maintain as I do preventative maintenance on it rather than waiting for failure so the reliability is up there.

More good news! Yesterday I found the cause of my C1A71-1C rear right height sensor supply fault. A broken plug at the sensor was causing a loss of signal. The fix was to fit a replacement connector from the wreck that I'm gradually dismantling.
The only defect currently is the park brake message that I had earlier. I did clear this message temporarily by turning the ignition from off to on 3 times while holding my foot on the brake pedal. The message reappeared the next time that the park brake switch was used.
