both the D4 and L320 would be considered midsized car with the L320 having less space. not sure if its actually smaller or not.

It appears to be about 10cm narrower and about the same shorter.

The L320 is shorter because it has a much shorter wheelbase - effective width is much the same - the difference is just due to different parts on the outside of the body - interior will be about the same.

If you need to tow I would get the D4 as the RRS is a bit pitchy and if you want to carry bulky stuff then a D4 - seating for 5 is about the same in both and the RRS feels a bit more airy because of the sloping dash instead of the upright one of the D4 - however behind the rear seats the D4 comes into its own - even though it is shorter than the D4, the space in the boot of the RRS is OK but because of the sloping rear window usability is substantially reduced.

Isn't the RRS an aluminium body and lighter? Thought that might have an impact on dynamics and beach driving.

You are thinking of the L494 RRS - the L320 RRS is built the same as the D3.

For a tow vehicle I’d always go the D4 over the RRS
    Absolutely spot on reply.
    I had a 2009 RRS with that lovely TDV8 , but now have an MY13 TDV6 D4

The D4 has noticeably superior ride and most evident when towing my 3.0T c/van, apart from the lack of V8 performance, the car handles the van much better than the RRS.
The 8 speed paddle shift to some extent makes up for lower engine performance than the V8

I'd like to get the TDV6 tuned to SDV6 performance but no one in Tassy seems to do it.

A D4 with TDV8 and 8 speed box would be pretty much the "ultimate"!

    Now: MY13 D4 TDV6. "E" rear diff. Cambo's magic Engine & Auto Tune. 1968 Austin 1800 Mk1 auto (my 5th)

If the underpinnings are basically the same between the D4s and the RRS with the 8 speed auto you’d think that it wouldn’t be too hard to put the TDV8 into the D4. Does anyone know of it being done?

No. really just for getting around. D4 would remain for towing and big family trips. And I can’t help but notice that our D4 gets 30% better fuel economy around town than our CR-V.

Check out Disco Mickey’s TDV8 D3 build thread on the Disco3.co.uk forum. Was at least a 2-3 year project using a RRS as the donor vehicle. Not only did he swap out the motor, but also a lot of the ECU’s and wiring harnesses (some of which needed extending) to get it to all work together.

Will give you an idea of what is involved. I personally think with the D4, the 5L Petrol V8 would be the better option.

Mike Park's TDV8 D3 also appeared in the Feb 2021 issue of Land Rover Owner International magazine.
