Welcome, you have made a good decision in joining this forum ,Lysergic.
Go for a D4 ,3.0 l, as stock standard as possible, that has a good service history .

Hello,
I am in the market for a new (second hand) car and I quite like the Discovery 4. I am very mechanically capable and would like to know from experienced owners what these cars are like to maintain and the costs associated. There are a fair share of horror stories out there with people destroying engines and astronomical repair bills but i wonder how common this is? Is the 2.7 or 3L the one to go for? and what are some traps for new owners?
Thanks for any help

Hi Lysergic. They're an excellent vehicle and I've had one from new for 4 years and around 97K. No dramas apart from the poxy EPB....mutter mutter about that thingI too get uptight and more than a bit nervy hearing horror engine destroyed stories and in an attempt to avert such a thing happening I change the oil and filters every 10K and the indie does them every 20K. Changed brake pads all round etc. Nothing hard about the basic servicing but I haven't attempted doing anything else mainly because nothing else has needed to be done.
I went for the basic model as I don't believe in all the gimmicky stuff there is on cars these days.... when I need a car to correct me wandering about on the roads I'll give up driving. More rubbish to go wrong in my mind.
Good luck with the search for a good used vehicle.
AlanH.
Welcome to the forum, D4 3.0 SD (diesel) or SC (supercharged petrol - if you can find one) both V6 .
For towing grunt and fuel economy, the diesel is the pick. For outright power and uniqueness, the SC.
Ignore the horror stories, keep an eye on the service intervals and chuck quality oil at it and you wont go far wrong.
THe D4 2.7l is less problematic than the 3.0L,but they are getting on a bit now, having been discontinued in 2012.
A well documented service record of the vehicle is a must.

SubscriberThe 8 speed auto is the pick of them.
Electronic park brakes only tend to give problems if you don't keep them adjusted and therefore the mechanism has to "travel" to far to operate which then causes problems.
If your budget allows, go for a post 2014/5 and you'll have skipped some of the earlier probs which occasionally occur.
Service the engine oil/filter every 10,000 klms max with the correct synthetic oil, I use Penrite Enviro + C1
Ensure you see the full service history and it's been done satisfactorily.
A lovely car to own and drive.
Lots of good info and help on this site.
